THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — RATNAGIRI
RATNAGIRI has a monopoly on its primary export that no one engineered, cannot be broken, and exists entirely because of two suns in the sky.
The Twin Stars
The G2V + G2V binary — two sun-like stars — produces an agricultural environment unlike anything else in the north arc. The dual-star light regime creates growth cycles that cannot be replicated in single-star systems. The specific spice-crop complex that the founding Desai family's agronomists developed in the second generation of settlement has never been successfully cultivated anywhere else. This is not for lack of trying. The varietal genetics have been licensed, exported, and planted on a dozen other worlds. Something about the paired illumination — the specific wavelength ratios, the alternating shadow patterns, the rhythmic temperature variation — appears to be necessary. Nobody can reproduce it. Ratnagiri's export is a monopoly produced by accident and maintained by physics.
The founding party followed a wave_2 land survey contract outward to 40.8 light-years from Gateway, where they found the twin suns and the soil that goes with them. The Konkan-coast heritage they carried had no cultural neighbors for the first century of settlement. They made do, and then they made something.
The Knowledge
The cultivation knowledge that makes the export irreplaceable has no written record and no institutional custodian. It lives in the Desai family's apprenticeship tradition: passed from practitioner to practitioner through hands-on learning that takes years to transmit and cannot be compressed into documentation without losing the elements that actually matter. The local parliament is elected and independent. What the Desai family holds is cultural authority and the original cultivation knowledge — those two things, and nothing formal.
The last three generations have each produced fewer apprentices than the one before. Whether this is demographic change, preference shift, or the slow dissolution of something that has been stable for four centuries is not a question the family discusses publicly.
Practical Information
Ratnagiri is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Enugu and GJ 194B. The twin suns produce a day cycle and light quality unlike anything else in the corridor. The system is self-sufficient in food, maintains its own infrastructure, imports very little, exports one thing, and has found this arrangement entirely satisfactory. No external faction has a significant footprint. The Assembly's nearest administrative presence is at Enugu.
The spice is genuinely exceptional.
