Population

Fragua means forge in Spanish — not the industrial plant but the craftsman's workshop, the fire and the anvil, the place where raw material is worked into specific form. The name was chosen two hundred years ago by Spanish-heritage settlers who arrived at GJ 567 knowing what they were coming to do: take equipment components manufactured at the Stalownia Kowalski operations at GJ 896A (Nowa Huta) and finish them.

The economic relationship with Nowa Huta is the foundation of everything at Fragua. Stalownia Kowalski produces heavy equipment — drilling platforms, excavation rigs, ore processors, habitat construction systems — in the standardized configurations that make large-scale manufacturing efficient. The configurations that the market actually requires, however, are not always standardized. A drilling platform for a high-gravity world with a dense atmosphere requires different sealing specifications than the same platform for a low-gravity airless body. A habitat construction module for a cold world needs thermal management systems that a temperate-world habitat does not. Kowalski's design philosophy — build for the environment the equipment will actually operate in — creates demand for downstream adaptation services that the manufacturer's own scale makes it inefficient to provide directly.

Fragua found its position in that gap. The founding families brought mechanical engineering expertise from their wave_4 migration background, established the adaptation workshops, and built a working relationship with Stalownia Kowalski that has endured for two centuries. The relationship is not a formal ownership arrangement — Fragua's workshops are independent contractors, not a Kowalski subsidiary — but it functions as one in most practical respects. The majority of Fragua's production work is Kowalski-component adaptation. The workshops do other work — local repair, custom fabrication for the south_reach's extraction operations, prototyping for smaller manufacturers — but Kowalski is the anchor client, and when Kowalski's production volume fluctuates, Fragua's economy fluctuates with it.

The K2V star at 37.5 light-years provides good surface conditions — G-type header notwithstanding, the K2V is a warm K-type with habitability characteristics that support the medium-density settlement Fragua has developed. The workshops are surface-built, which is an expression of the founders' confidence in the stellar environment and also a practical choice for the kind of work they do: large equipment adaptation requires volume, and underground construction that could accommodate a drilling rig undergoing modification would be more expensive than surface structures that can be sized as needed.

Two hundred years of this work has produced a community with a specific technical character. Fragua's population is smaller than Nowa Huta's and less known outside the south_reach, but in the circles where Kowalski equipment is used and where adaptation quality is valued, Fragua's workshops have a reputation for precision finishing that clients pay specifically to access. The lead engineers at Fragua can trace their professional lineage back to the founding generation, and the design knowledge that has accumulated over eight generations of continuous adaptation work is not formally documented anywhere — it lives in practice, in the hands of the people doing the work, in the shop-floor culture that the founding generation established and that has been transmitted through apprenticeship ever since.

The single aperture connects to GJ 896A (Nowa Huta). This is the system's only gate connection — the only way in, the only way out — and it is also the primary commercial relationship. Freight moving to and from Fragua moves through Nowa Huta's logistics infrastructure, which means Kowalski's freight management team handles the practical logistics of Fragua's supply chain. This creates a dependency that the founding families accepted as the price of their position and that two centuries of commercial stability have validated.


Supply Dependency

Fragua's primary import is Stalownia Kowalski equipment components — pre-manufactured elements that arrive at Fragua's workshops for adaptation finishing. Secondary imports are the raw materials that the adaptation work requires: specialty metals, sealing compounds, insulating materials, electronic components. Food imports supplement local agricultural production, which is adequate but not abundant given the population's focus on industrial work. Exports are adapted equipment destined for extraction and construction operations throughout the south_reach and, through Nowa Huta's distribution network, into the broader Reach.

The economic dependency on Nowa Huta is not disguised. It is the system's defining condition and the community is clear-eyed about it. What the community has spent two centuries building is the expertise that makes the dependency a negotiating position rather than a subordinate one: Kowalski could find other adaptation contractors, but not ones with two hundred years of accumulated shop-floor knowledge about Kowalski's specific equipment design conventions.


Faction Notes

The Fragua Workshop Council is the community's governance body and its most significant institution. The council represents the major workshop operations — seven principal shops and several smaller operations — and the community's civic infrastructure. Workshop representation on the council is weighted by workforce size, which means the three largest shops have more formal influence over council decisions than the smaller ones. This is disputed by the smaller workshops, who argue that workforce size reflects capital investment rather than skill, and that the weighting undervalues the specialized work that smaller operations provide.

Stalownia Kowalski does not have governance representation at Fragua — the relationship is commercial, not corporate — but the company's procurement team's relationship with the workshop council's leadership is close enough that the distinction is occasionally difficult to observe from outside.


Silence Topic

The shops at Fragua have, over two centuries of Kowalski adaptation work, encountered several equipment modifications that were not in any Kowalski design specification and that the clients who requested them declined to document in the standard adaptation specification records that the workshops file with the Commission's equipment registry. The workshops completed the work — the clients were paying and the modifications were structurally sound — and maintained internal records of what was done, but the Commission-filed records do not reflect the actual modifications. There are fourteen such adaptations in the workshop council's private archive over the last fifty years. Twelve of the client operations are in systems where the legal status of the extraction activities has not been clearly established.


Narrative Hook

A workshop engineer conducting a routine service inspection on adapted Kowalski equipment at a new wave_5 settlement has found that the equipment's modification history does not match the documentation that was supplied with the unit — specifically, that the unit was modified for operational conditions that the client's declared system profile does not include, and that the modification required knowledge of the actual destination environment that the client would only have had if the destination had been surveyed before the official survey record shows it was.


Calibration Note

The G-type header designation reflects the stub generation; the K2V stellar profile governs all lore detail. K2V is a warm K-type with conditions suitable for surface industrial operations, consistent with the surface-workshop infrastructure. Wave_4 dead_end at hop 7, adjacent only to GJ 896A (Nowa Huta), is the topology that makes Fragua's economic relationship with Kowalski structurally inevitable: with one gate connection and that connection leading directly to the manufacturer, there is no alternative supply chain to develop and no reason to develop one. The community built its identity around the constraint rather than against it.
