Confluência is a word that carries its own explanation. In the Portuguese of the founding generation, it means the place where rivers meet — and for four centuries, that is exactly what Confluência has been. Six horizon gates. Wave_2 settlement, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the south_reach. A K-type star that burns warmer and steadier than the red dwarfs that anchor so many of this region's systems, offering daylight cycles that feel almost familiar, with an orange-gold cast that has become synonymous with the system in south_reach art and advertising alike. The founders named it honestly. It became more true with every generation.

The original colonists came from the Brazilian and Angolan corridor of the emigration wave — Portuguese-speaking communities with deep roots in cooperative economic traditions. The founding charter established what is now called the Confluência model: a nested cooperative structure in which residential associations hold property collectively, production guilds manage industrial output, and a delegate council coordinates between them. No individual can hold more productive infrastructure than a household needs; no guild can expand beyond a size at which its members still know each other by name. It is a system that should not scale, and four hundred years of continuous operation suggest that the founders understood something about human organization that is still being debated elsewhere.

What it produces is a community of unusual density and resilience. Confluência has a population that feels, to visitors from more transient systems, almost oppressively embedded — everyone seems to know everyone, family networks span three and four generations in the same cooperative district, disputes get settled through relationships rather than institutions. The flip side is that outsiders can find it difficult to get traction. The cooperative structure is not formally exclusionary, but membership in a residential association requires sponsorship by two existing members, and the guilds are similar. It takes time to become part of Confluência in any meaningful sense.

Six gates makes it the largest transit node in the south inner ring by aperture count. Three of those gates route toward inner systems — Carvalhais, GJ 884, and GJ 213. Two reach toward the outer approaches — GJ 695A and GJ 1156. One connects to GJ 388. The result is that Confluência sits at the intersection of the south_reach's two main cargo corridors: the inner ring that loops through Lalande and Carvalhais, and the outer approaches that reach toward the frontier. Freight that needs to move between those corridors passes through Confluência. The cooperative model has, somewhat unexpectedly, made the system's major guilds among the wealthiest institutions in the south_reach — not through accumulation by individuals, but through collective holdings that are reinvested into infrastructure and quality of life.

The Assembly maintains a delegate office and a modest compliance staff. At hop 4, the institutional presence is lighter than at Lalande — scheduled inspections rather than continuous oversight — but Confluência's transit volume means the Assembly pays attention. The cooperative governance structure has occasionally been in tension with Assembly administrative requirements, which tend to assume hierarchical organizational authority. The delegate office has learned to work with the guild council structure rather than around it.

Supply Dependency

Confluência is a net exporter of manufactured goods, food processing capacity, and technical services. The cooperative guilds include fabrication and agricultural operations built up over four centuries of steady investment. The system still imports raw materials — refined metals and specialized compounds from GJ 695A and GJ 213 feed the manufacturing guilds — but it is less supply-dependent than most south_reach hubs. The six-gate structure means disruption to any single connection is absorbed without crisis.

Faction Notes

The Guild Delegate Council is the effective government of Confluência — a body of elected representatives from registered cooperatives and guilds. It operates by consensus with fallback to supermajority vote, a process that can be frustratingly slow when speed is needed but produces decisions with broad legitimacy. The Council does not formally recognize the Assembly as having authority over domestic affairs, though it has never formally challenged it either. The relationship is one of polite parallel existence.

The Portworkers' Cooperative is formally one guild among many, but its control of gate-adjacent infrastructure gives it outsized influence. The six gates require constant maintenance, and the portworkers hold that knowledge. They are the most outward-facing of the guilds, most exposed to the wider Reach, and sometimes the first sign of outside influence entering the system.

Silence Topic

The founding charter contains a clause — never rescinded, never invoked, known to every civics-educated adult — that permits the council to close all six gates simultaneously in the event of an existential threat to the cooperative structure. What constitutes such a threat is not defined. The clause has never been used. The fact that it exists is not secret, but discussing it in terms of when it might be used is understood to be in poor taste. Outsiders who learn about it and press the question are quietly redirected.

Narrative Hook

A fourth-generation member of one of the founding cooperative families has been quietly selling her family's collective shares — which is technically impossible under the charter, unless someone has found a way to restructure the underlying asset instruments through entities registered in adjacent systems.
