THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CONFLUÊNCIA
CONFLUÊNCIA is the place where rivers meet, which is what its name means, which is the kind of honest naming that four hundred years of proving the description correct has transformed from a hope into a simple statement of geography.
The Model
The founding charter established what is now called the Confluência model: a nested cooperative structure in which residential associations hold property collectively, production guilds manage industrial output, and a delegate council coordinates between them. No individual can hold more productive infrastructure than a household needs. No guild can expand beyond a size at which its members still know each other by name. It is a system that should not scale.
It has been running for four hundred years. The founders apparently understood something about human organization that is still being argued about elsewhere.
The result is a community that feels, to visitors from more transient systems, almost oppressively embedded. Everyone seems to know everyone. Family networks span three and four generations in the same cooperative district. Disputes are settled through relationships rather than institutions. Getting traction here as an outsider requires sponsorship, patience, and a willingness to be genuinely useful to people who have been useful to each other for centuries. The flip side is a resilience that institutional arrangements assembled from stranger-relationships cannot replicate.
Six Gates
The six apertures make Confluência the largest transit node in the south inner ring by count. Three connect inward, two outward, one to GJ 388. The cooperative guilds that accumulated over four centuries of steady collective investment include fabrication and agricultural operations wealthy enough to make the system a net exporter — not through individual accumulation but through collective holdings that are reinvested into infrastructure and quality of life. The Portworkers' Cooperative, which controls gate-adjacent infrastructure and handles the maintenance that six gates continuously require, is the most outward-facing of the guilds and therefore the one most frequently exposed to ideas from outside. Whether this is considered a feature or a liability depends on who you ask.
The founding charter contains a clause, known to every civics-educated adult, permitting the council to close all six gates simultaneously in the event of an existential threat to the cooperative structure. What constitutes such a threat is not defined. The clause has never been invoked. Discussing when it might be invoked is understood to be in poor taste. Outside visitors who learn about it and ask directly are redirected with great courtesy.
Practical Information
Confluência is four hops from Gateway with six gate apertures. The Assembly delegate office has learned to work with the guild council structure rather than around it; the cooperative governance does not map cleanly onto Assembly administrative assumptions and both sides have reached an accommodation. The K4 Ve primary burns warmer and steadier than the red dwarfs of neighboring systems. The orange-gold daylight is a source of genuine local pride and a motif in cooperative iconography throughout the south Reach. It is, objectively, a pleasant place to be if you have the sponsorship.
