THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — HAODU
HAODU is the east corridor's commercial center, which is the polite way of saying it is the system where people with the standing to make corridor-wide decisions make them, and everyone else's standing is defined by their distance from Haodu.
The Combine
The system was named after Hao Shen, the founding executive of the Yongli Combine, in the wave_3 convention of naming things after the person who paid for them. Hao Shen died three centuries ago, having declined lattice enrollment — a decision that the current Combine leadership, which holds its positions through competitive credentialing rather than inheritance, marks as an unusual personal choice rather than institutional guidance. The founding culture has nonetheless been remarkably persistent: technocratic decision-making, credential-based advancement, deep institutional skepticism of governance by popular vote. The Combine does not prevent residents from organizing democratic alternatives. It simply runs the systems that matter and staffs them with people who earned their positions, which makes democratic alternatives feel somewhat decorative.
The binary star configuration — G8V primary with a K4V companion — gives Haodu two stable orbital zones and a platform density that no comparable hub between the core and the outer corridor can match. Research affiliates, trading houses, logistics operators. The manufacturing base is real and productive. But the manufacturing is almost beside the point. Haodu's weight comes from institutional depth, which comes from three hundred years of being where decisions happen.
The Governance Architecture
The founding charter includes provisions that are standard for wave_3 Syndic development: majority voting rights vest in the founding entity in perpetuity, subject to a supermajority Assembly compliance review every fifty years. The Assembly compliance reviews have consistently certified the Combine as compliant. Six reviews over three centuries. Not one amendment.
What these reviews do not examine is whether the supermajority threshold in the original charter is achievable by any party other than the Combine itself, given three centuries of share redistribution. The legal architecture is formally correct. The reviewing commissioners have, in each case, subsequently held positions within Combine-affiliated institutions. This pattern is documented if you look at the right records. It is not discussed in any official proceeding, because the mechanism that would discuss it is the same mechanism that has been consistently satisfied by the thing under examination.
Practical Information
Haodu is four hops from Gateway with five gate apertures connecting to Relay 7, Yongjin, Samuels Reach, Nová Tržnice, and Shenwei. Prometheus Labs has a research affiliate in the orbital platform complex. The Lattice Commission's office is one of the most capable in the east_reach, because commercial arbitration at this volume requires it, and because the Combine and the Commission have reached the kind of mutual recognition that institutions achieve when neither has managed to displace the other in three hundred years of trying.
