Recanto was founded two centuries ago by political exiles — a cohort expelled from an inner south_reach system after backing the losing side of a governance dispute — who chose their destination specifically because one gate, one way in, is the most defensible topology available. Nobody came looking for them. They stayed anyway. The original grievance has faded into founding mythology. The institutional reflexes it created are fully operational.

Supply Dependency

Recanto is substantially self-sufficient by design and by necessity. The dead_end topology that the founders chose for defensibility also means that supply chains are single-point — everything external comes through one gate, and if that gate is disrupted, nothing comes through until it isn't. The community has calibrated its local production accordingly, with agricultural and fabrication capacity that can sustain the population indefinitely on locally available resources.

The dependency on external supply is real but deliberately minimized. Medical equipment, specific manufactured components, and communication relay hardware come through the gate on a schedule. The community has maintained contingency stores against gate disruption since the first decade of settlement. The duration those stores cover has been a matter of internal discussion in every generation; the current figure is not publicly stated.

Faction Notes

Recanto has no external faction presence and no institutional affiliations. The community governs itself through a council structure that traces its origin to the emergency governance framework the founding cohort established on arrival — temporary institutions that became permanent by accumulation of precedent rather than by formal constitutional process.
