THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — RECANTO
RECANTO means "retreat," and the founders chose both the word and the topology with the same logic: one gate, one way in, because when you have been expelled from an inner corridor system after backing the losing side of a governance dispute, the most defensible position available is the one with the fewest approaches.
The Topology of Safety
Dead_end, hop 9. One aperture connecting to GJ 1267. The founders chose it specifically for the topology. The original grievance — a governance dispute in an inner south_reach system, a losing side, an expulsion — has faded into founding mythology two centuries on. What has not faded are the institutional reflexes the event created: thoroughgoing indifference to outside institutional claims, zero voluntary compliance reporting, an emergency council structure that began as a temporary measure in the founding year and became permanent by the accumulation of precedent rather than by constitutional design.
Nobody came looking for them. They stayed anyway, which means the defensible topology was either prescient or, with the benefit of two centuries of hindsight, unnecessary. The community does not frame it as unnecessary. The instinct toward single-approach defensibility, once encoded at the community's founding, is not the kind of instinct that reviews itself when the threat doesn't materialize.
The Archive That Tells One Story
The founding mythology has a clear villain and a clear injustice. The records of what actually happened are in Recanto's own archives, written by the people who were expelled, from the expelled cohort's perspective. The inner corridor systems where the dispute took place have their own accounts. Recanto has never requested access to those accounts. The community's position — implicit rather than stated — is that the founding narrative is functional as an identity anchor, and that its historical accuracy is, at this point, beside the point.
Whether this is a reasonable accommodation to the limits of accessible history or a two-century refusal to ask a question, the answer lives in records the community has not read. This is not unusual. It is, however, the foundation the community is built on.
Practical Information
Recanto is nine hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to GJ 1267. The community is substantially self-sufficient — dead_end topology enforces this. Medical equipment and specific manufactured components are the critical external dependencies. The contingency stores cover gate disruption durations that the community does not publicly state. The governance is autonomous and functional. Outside institutional claims are noted and disregarded with equal courtesy.
