THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — TANAKA STATION

TANAKA STATION is named after the company that built it, which is a naming convention that produces honest results: you know immediately what you're dealing with, which is a transit waystation that became a settlement when workers brought families, families needed services, and services required permanent infrastructure, and the company was absorbed before the community had a chance to rename anything.

The Absorption

The Tanaka Development Group ran light manufacturing, component assembly, and mid-corridor freight consolidation across three east_reach systems for two centuries before being absorbed into a larger Syndic consortium. The station became self-sustaining before the absorption. The name stayed because paperwork had used it long enough that changing it seemed more disruptive than leaving it. This is how most institutional names in the corridor survive: not through affection, but through the higher transaction cost of revision.

The workers' cooperative that emerged from the Development Group's industrial workforce has been the de facto governance of the permanent residential population for over a century. It is not a formal Assembly-compliant entity — it is a residential association with enforcement authority over local resource allocation, which is exactly what workers needed when their corporate employer stopped being reliably present. The transit authority handles gate operations and remains more formally compliant with Assembly frameworks. The two bodies operate under an informal division: the transit authority handles what the Assembly cares about, the cooperative handles what residents care about. Neither has expanded into the other's territory in over a century.

The Audit History

When the Tanaka Development Group was absorbed, the acquisition terms included clauses about gate operation rights. Those terms are in a commercial archive that is technically accessible to Assembly commercial review and practically unreachable without dedicated legal effort. Local administrators believe — on the basis of institutional memory rather than documented fact — that the terms include a revenue-share provision on gate transit fees that the absorbing consortium has continued to collect through shell intermediaries.

The last administrator who raised this formally found the process expensive and the outcome inconclusive, which is a documented fact rather than institutional memory. The transit fee accounting has been audited five times since the absorption. Each audit was conducted by a firm with traceable connections to the absorbing entity's legal representatives, which is either coincidence or an explanation, and the distinction requires examining documents that the legal process has so far failed to reach.

Practical Information

Tanaka Station is six hops from Gateway with three gate apertures connecting to Kaelong, Oshima, and Shenwei. The system has no fully habitable world — the main population is on orbital industrial platforms. The M4 primary provides adequate energy. The quarterly Commission field officer rotation produces documentation that is current when reviewed.

Adams of the Guide rates Tanaka Station: Functionally Industrial. Audit Outcomes Inconclusive.
