THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — EERSTE WACHT
EERSTE WACHT means "first watch," and the community has been on it for five hundred years at hop 18, which is the anomaly that the founding record documents without explaining, and that the community's descendants have been living with long enough that the distinction between reason and tradition has dissolved.
What Wave_2 at Hop 18 Means
When Eerste Wacht was founded, the inner corridors were still forming. Systems at hop six and seven were considered the frontier's edge. The founding cohort — approximately sixty people, predominantly Afrikaans-heritage from the south_reach's Southern African cultural stream — transited five consecutive uninhabited systems, left all established settlement behind, and kept going until they reached a K5V dwarf at a distance that would not see regular corridor development for another three hundred years.
The founding record documents the expedition's departure point, its roster, its material inventory, and its destination. It does not explain why. The survey data for GJ 546 that was available at the time showed marginal conditions — thin atmosphere, limited water, nothing that distinguishes this system from a hundred other marginal systems at similar distances. The founding record lists the destination without justification.
The elder council's position, stated once to a Commission representative approximately 200 years ago: the founding generation "came because they were meant to come, and we stay because we were meant to stay." This was filed as a cultural note. It does not answer the question.
Five Centuries of Becoming
Five hundred years of continuous habitation by a community that has had no significant external influence to dilute it. The language has drifted into a local variant that an inner-Reach Afrikaans speaker would recognize and find increasingly difficult to follow after the first few exchanges. The architectural forms, naming conventions, and agricultural practices carry the stamp of a founding culture that has had five hundred years to become itself.
Eerste Wacht is not a museum. It is what a culture looks like when left alone long enough.
The founding families' surnames dominate the community roster. Genetic diversity is narrow, managed through careful partnership protocols established in the second century. The settlement is built into rocky terrain near the world's single reliable aquifer, which every subsequent generation has maintained with the particular care of people whose survival depends on a single point of hydrological failure. The community has needed its ten-year emergency stockpiles twice in five centuries. They do not discuss the circumstances.
Practical Information
Eerste Wacht is eighteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 3943 and GJ 111. Minimal external dependency — the community manufactures most of what it needs from local materials. Medical technology and genetic material for the partnership protocols are the critical imports, arriving at intervals ranging from two to five years. The community is courteous to visitors and uninterested in extended interaction. The founding reason for being here has been quietly not-answered for five centuries and shows no signs of becoming answerable now.
