THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — INHAMBANE
INHAMBANE means "the place where people look for each other," which is an excellent name for a system whose founding generation built silos before they built a council chamber, and whose primary contribution to the south Reach is ensuring that people in adjacent systems do not starve.
The Silos
The alluvial plains of Inhambane's northern continent — thick, fine-grained, moisture-retaining — produced surplus grain by the end of the first generation. By the end of the second generation, the surplus exceeded what the local population could plausibly consume, which created both an economic model and a problem that has defined the system ever since: where do you put that much grain?
The answer, developed over two centuries of incremental infrastructure investment, is the largest agricultural storage complex in the south Reach. The moisture control systems, the pest management protocols, the inventory software developed locally — all of it built by a community whose founding ethic was that food security is the precondition for everything else. The Armazém software suite, which runs inventory management at agricultural facilities across a significant arc of the south Reach, was a byproduct of running the storage operations efficiently enough that adjacent systems started asking if they could use the same system.
The Armazém master data repository has always been hosted at Inhambane. The original licensing contracts noted this. Most systems' administrators did not flag it as significant. What the repository contains is a complete commercial history of agricultural production and trade across a significant arc of the south Reach for two hundred years. The Agricultural Storage Cooperative, which holds the repository, characterizes aggregated cross-system data as an internal operational resource. This characterization has not been tested.
The Cooperative's Other Cooperative
The Grão Freight Cooperative was founded two centuries ago by smaller producers who felt the storage cooperative's shipping arrangements favored the major operators. It has since become the second-largest institution in the system. The two cooperatives' relations are professionally correct and historically adversarial; the freight cooperative has been attempting to acquire a storage license for sixty years. The three families who managed the first grain storage expansion — and whose descendants still hold the major storage licenses — maintain a structural weight in council proceedings that is not written into the charter but is not absent from the room.
Practical Information
Inhambane is five hops from Gateway with three gate apertures — junction connecting Crux Station, Koeberg, and GJ 829. Food production is structurally insulated against disruption by design. The system imports refined fuels, technical equipment, and modest luxury goods, and is not supply-dependent in any critical sense. The K-type primary is warm enough for the alluvial plains to do what they do. Three hundred years of consistent surplus have produced a community that understands food security in both agricultural and political terms.
