Population

Stillvakt was settled approximately three hundred years ago by a consortium of Scandinavian families who had tracked survey data from the inner corridor and recognized the planet's dense boreal belt as commercially exploitable. The name means "quiet watch" — an early settler's description of the long winter nights under a G0IV subgiant that burns too pale and too large on the horizon, never quite matching the warmth its luminosity class implies. The planet has one primary landmass at mid-latitude, heavily forested, with a northern ice sheet and a southern temperate band that hosts the settlement's agricultural margin.

The Nordmark Skog operation predates most of the corridor institutions behind it. What began as a mapped timber concession covering roughly forty thousand square kilometers of old-growth softwood has compounded across seven generations into something closer to a land trust with logging rights — the Nordmark family does not own the planet, but they have managed its productive belt long enough that the distinction has stopped mattering to anyone local. The company name translates as "northern forest," which started as a geographic description on founding documents and became a brand only gradually, as their milled lumber began moving inward through GJ 3333 with enough consistency to develop a corridor reputation. Nordmark Skog dark-grain panels appear in station interiors two and three hops inward. Most people who buy them do not know where they come from.

The settlement itself is small and functional — a central processing town called Fällstaden, three satellite logging camps, and a transit handling facility at the aperture site that the family also operates under contract. There is no meaningful separation between civic life and company life. The senior Nordmarks sit on the local council because no one else has the administrative infrastructure to run one. This is not experienced as a grievance. It is experienced as how things work.

The planet's ecology is cold, wet, and largely undisturbed outside the active harvest zones. Nordmark Skog maintains a regeneration program — not from ecological sentiment, but because a company that has been logging the same ranges for three centuries understands that the alternative is mining a finite asset. Replanting cycles run forty to sixty years per plot, which means there are currently four distinct cohorts of forest at various growth stages visible from orbit.

Supply Dependency

Stillvakt depends on inbound freight through GJ 3333 for manufactured goods, processed foods outside its agricultural margin, and technical components for logging and milling equipment. Nordmark Skog maintains a standard parts inventory rotation with a corridor supplier based two hops inward, but lead times on specialist components run long enough that the company keeps deep reserves. Fuel and consumables for the aperture transit facility come in on the same freight runs that carry timber out.

Outbound: milled softwood lumber, structural panel stock marketed as Nordmark Dark Grain, raw log bundles for processing elsewhere, and a modest volume of seed stock from the regeneration program that has found buyers in reforestation projects on more-settled worlds.

Faction Notes

Nordmark Skog is the only institution of consequence. The family has held the primary land concession through three renewal cycles and has never faced a serious challenge to it. A minority of the workforce are not family members or long-term family employees — seasonal contract cutters, aperture technical staff, a small number of independent trappers who operate in the non-harvest zones under a licensing arrangement the company introduced two generations ago as a social management measure. None of these groups have organized political presence.

The Commission maintains a nominal registration at the aperture site — a single officer, usually rotated every eighteen months from the GJ 3333 post — whose function is customs logging and nothing more. Enforcement actions at Stillvakt are essentially unheard of, because nothing interesting enough to enforce against happens here.

Silence Topic

The condition of the old-growth zones beyond the current harvest boundary. Nordmark Skog's public-facing regeneration program is genuine, but the original concession surveys mapped significantly more old-growth area than the current regeneration cycle accounts for. What happened in those sections — whether they were logged and quietly dropped from the replanting register, or whether something about that terrain discouraged harvest — is not discussed. The trappers know. They don't bring it up.

Narrative Hook

A Nordmark Skog freight manifest that passed through GJ 3333 three months ago listed a shipment of "reclaimed structural timber" with dimensions that do not correspond to any tree species in the boreal catalog.

Calibration Note

The G0IV stellar class reads slightly warm for the cold boreal character described, but the subgiant's low surface gravity means the habitable zone sits at greater orbital distance, producing longer seasons and lower average insolation than a main-sequence star of equivalent luminosity. The mismatch between star type and planetary temperature is deliberate and consistent with the established stellar data.
