THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — STILLVAKT
STILLVAKT means "quiet watch" — an early settler's description of the long winter nights under a subgiant that burns too pale and too large on the horizon — and the system has been keeping that watch quietly for three hundred years while the corridor behind it developed opinions about politics.
The Forest
The Nordmark Skog operation predates most of the corridor institutions behind it. What began as a mapped timber concession covering roughly forty thousand square kilometers of old-growth softwood has compounded across seven generations into something closer to a land trust with logging rights — the Nordmark family does not own the planet, but they have managed its productive belt long enough that the distinction has stopped mattering to anyone local.
Nordmark Skog dark-grain panels appear in station interiors two and three hops inward. Most people who buy them do not know where they come from. The company's name translates as "northern forest" and started as a geographic description on founding documents. It became a brand gradually, without anyone intending it, which is how the best brands happen.
The settlement is small and functional: a central processing town, three satellite logging camps, a transit handling facility at the aperture site the family also operates under contract. There is no meaningful separation between civic life and company life. The senior Nordmarks sit on the local council because no one else has the administrative infrastructure to run one. The Commission has a single officer, rotated every eighteen months from GJ 3333, whose function is customs logging and nothing more. Enforcement actions here are essentially unheard of, because nothing interesting enough to enforce against happens.
The planet's ecology is cold, wet, and largely undisturbed outside the active harvest zones. Nordmark Skog maintains a regeneration program — not from sentiment, but because a company that has been logging the same ranges for three centuries understands that the alternative is mining a finite asset.
The Survey Discrepancy
The original concession surveys mapped significantly more old-growth area than the current regeneration cycle accounts for. What happened in those sections — whether logged and dropped from the replanting register, or whether something about that terrain discouraged harvest — is not discussed. Three months ago, a Nordmark Skog freight manifest passing through GJ 3333 listed a shipment of "reclaimed structural timber" with dimensions that do not correspond to any tree species in the boreal catalog. The Commission officer at GJ 3333 has filed an inquiry. The trappers who work the non-harvest zones know what they have seen out there. They have not been asked yet.
Practical Information
Stillvakt is seven hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to GJ 3333. The G0IV subgiant provides long, pale days and long dark winters. The lumber is excellent. The old-growth zones beyond the harvest boundary are not on the map.
