THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KETTENSCHMIED
KETTENSCHMIED means "chain-smith" — which is what the community does, what it has done for three hundred years, and what the deep frontier corridor's settlements depend on it to keep doing.
What Draws Metalworkers to Marginal Worlds
The K5 primary is dim. The habitable world is marginal. The wave-3 settlers who arrived three hundred years ago came from the west_reach's industrial corridor, and they came not for the world but for the metallic asteroid field in the outer system — an unusually rich concentration of ferrous and rare-earth deposits that the survey data had identified and that the founding cooperative's expertise was specifically suited to exploit.
The founding cohort were metalworkers. Their fabrication cooperative had sold its inner west_reach assets to fund the expedition. They manufactured chain, cable, structural joining hardware, and the heavy fastening components that every settlement in the Reach requires and that most settlements import from the inner-Reach industrial base at significant cost. At hop 15, producing those components fourteen hops closer to the deep frontier's settlements than the nearest inner-Reach fabricator, the economics made sense.
Three hundred years of continuous operation have made Kettenschmied the deep frontier's most reliable source of fabricated metal components south of the mid-Reach corridor. Modest output by inner-Reach standards. Outsized significance to the settlements along the chain. Sonnenkap, the Travessia corridor, the communities further toward Abzu — they all depend on Kettenschmied for the structural and mechanical components that cannot be locally manufactured. The corridor's smithy. The corridor knows it.
What the Smithy Depends On
The community's entire food supply is imported via corridor trade, exchanged for fabricated metal goods. The marginal world cannot produce sufficient food for a population of 1,500 people. A disruption to agricultural supply from Sonnenkap or the corridor would produce a food crisis within months. The founding cooperative's charter mandates a six-month emergency food reserve, which has been maintained continuously for three centuries. This is not comfort. It is the community's primary preoccupation, managed with the specific attention that metalworkers bring to anything with consequences if it fails.
Three Centuries of West_Reach Operational Style
The habitation is industrial in character — pressurized surface facilities built from the metals the community fabricates, practical, maintained to the standard that metalworkers maintain their tools. The shift schedules, maintenance rotations, and quality control protocols have been running for three centuries with refinements but no fundamental changes. The guild-structure governance has kept the community functional without quite avoiding the tension between guild membership and non-guild residents, which surfaces periodically and resolves by precedent without ever reaching formal dispute.
Practical Information
Kettenschmied is fifteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 904 and Sonnenkap. Fabricated metal components are available for trade. Basic reprovisioning for transit vessels. The community trades with precision and sustained attention to the supply relationships that keep it fed.
Adams of the Guide rates Kettenschmied: Three hundred years of necessary work, done far enough from the people who need it that they've largely forgotten it exists.
