THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — YTTERMARK
YTTERMARK means "outermost march" — the furthest boundary — and the Wave 3 settlers who named it were being exact, not optimistic. Three hundred years later, it is still exact.
The Last System
One gate. It connects to Grenzstein, which connects through sixteen more hops back to Gateway. The gate does not go anywhere else. Yttermark is the last system in the Settled Reach. This is a fact every resident knows, most have complicated feelings about, and none have found a way to make less true.
The binary pair — two cool orange K-type dwarfs in close orbit around a common center — produces a habitable zone that is workable rather than comfortable. The founding cooperative spent a generation mapping the agricultural cycles calibrated to two stars at different positions in their mutual orbit, radiation patterns varying by system position in ways that took years to understand. The community three hundred years deep into this adaptation does not experience it as complexity. It is the normal sky. The stellar configuration that would disorient an outsider is simply home.
Yttermark is broadly self-sufficient. It has to be. Four consolidated freight runs per standard year from Grenzstein. What does not arrive on those four shipments does not arrive. The manufacturing base and agricultural output are sized around this constraint. They produce sufficiency, not abundance, and they have been producing it for three centuries.
The Weight
The community is not unhappy. This must be said plainly, because outside observers assume otherwise and the assumption is wrong. Three hundred years of self-reliance has produced deep internal social bonds, strong cultural coherence, and a collective competence the technical board documents with evident pride. They chose to stay, generation after generation. They are not victims of their isolation.
What Yttermark's council does not send in its annual communications: the full account of what it has cost to hold the edge. The young adults who leave on the supply ship and do not come back — a thin outward trickle the departure register tracks. The agricultural years when the binary stars' combined light pattern shifts and the crops do not respond as they should, and the community eats carefully until the pattern corrects. The specific quality of the winters. These things are known inside the system and not transmitted out, because transmitting them would make Yttermark legible as a struggling community rather than a self-sufficient one, and the self-sufficiency is the identity that keeps people here.
The founding governance structure — general assembly of households, elected executive committee, technical board — has been modified many times and never replaced. No dynasty, no founding family that accumulated authority. The founding documents' provisions for preventing concentrated authority held, which historians attribute to those provisions being enforced by people who actually wanted them to hold.
Practical Information
Yttermark is seventeen hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to Grenzstein. The Gate Corporation maintenance team visits on a longer cycle than anywhere else in the Reach. The community feeds them well and asks careful questions about what is happening in the rest of the corridor. The rest of the corridor is very far away.
