Stilwater is the quiet deep of the Cairn pocket chain. The name — "still water" in Afrikaans and Dutch — was chosen two centuries ago by settlers who found the system's main habitable world unremarkable in all the ways they wanted: no violent weather, no unstable tectonics, no competing interests. Just a planet that would hold still and let people farm it. It has been doing that ever since.

At hop 7, Stilwater is as far from the interstellar corridor's center of gravity as a settled system can practically be. Commission presence is nominal — a charter filing office, a transit log, a medical station that operates two days a week. Everything else is community-managed and has been for as long as anyone can remember. The original wave_4 settlers were the grandparents of the oldest generation now living here, and the institutional memory of "before we had all this" means something to them.

The population is small and deliberately so. Land is plentiful, neighbors are infrequent, and the stars at night include the glow of Breëvlei one gate back — visible to the naked eye on clear nights, a reminder of the corridor they sit at the end of.

Supply Dependency

Stilwater relies on inbound manufactured goods, medical supplies, and technical components from the corridor behind it, primarily sourced through Breëvlei and Waterkant. Its agricultural output is sufficient for local consumption with modest surplus sent back along the chain. The supply line is long and the delays are part of life here.

Faction Notes

A community council operates all civic functions. No external faction has established a meaningful presence — the system is too far out and too small to justify the overhead. The Landbou Raad cooperative network from the corridor includes Stilwater in its distribution agreements, though the relationship is informal and occasionally slow.

Silence Topic

The status of GJ 914A, the system on the far side. Stilwater is a through_route between Breëvlei and GJ 914A, but no one discusses what exactly is there or what the transit logs from that direction contain.

Narrative Hook

The through_route beyond Stilwater toward GJ 914A has been technically open for thirty years, but no settlement has taken root there, and the transit logs from vessels coming in from that direction have a pattern of missing hours that no one has formally explained.

Calibration Note

Wave_4 at hop 7 is unusual — most hop 7 settlements are wave_5. Stilwater's early founding reflects the Cairn pocket's original settlement push, which reached deep before the Reach's expansion slowed during the early Secession years.
