THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — DOKKUM
DOKKUM is named for a flat, practical Frisian town in the historical Netherlands, and the system has lived up to the reference in ways that the founding consortium probably found straightforward and everyone who has since tried to negotiate equitable terms with Solheim has found somewhat less so.
The Loop
Dokkum sits between Solheim and GJ 442A on a loop that creates two specific structural facts about the system's economic life. First: Solheim, the western corridor's most productive agricultural system, is the neighbor to one side, and it supplies Dokkum's food. Second: GJ 442A is the neighbor to the other side, and it receives food shipments from Solheim routed through Dokkum. This makes Dokkum both a dependent and a conduit, simultaneously, for the same supply chain.
The arrangement with Solheim has been renegotiated every decade for three hundred years. Dokkum manufactures precision components and equipment that Solheim's agricultural sector needs. Solheim grows food that Dokkum's industrial population eats. Both parties express stated dissatisfaction with the terms at every renegotiation. Both parties then continue the relationship unchanged. This is a form of partnership that honest observers would describe as functional.
The Specifications
Dokkum's industrial base produces precision components for the transit and extraction sectors and maintenance services for vessels that prefer not to run all the way to Hansestadt for major work. The G5V primary provides comfortable surface conditions that the M-dwarf dominated corridor cannot match, which helps explain why the manufacturing workforce is stable and multigenerational.
Approximately fifteen percent of Dokkum's current production is manufactured to specifications tighter than commercial transit applications require. A retired manufacturing engineer noticed this eight years ago and filed a citizen petition with the district council. The council referred the petition to the regulatory office, which found no breach of Dokkum's commercial license conditions, which is accurate: the license does not require disclosure of component end use. The components reach their eventual destination through an MVG tier-two intermediary. Dokkum is a tier-three supplier. The tier structure was designed by people who understood that suppliers are most useful when they do not ask about end use, and Dokkum, which is a flat and practical community, has not asked.
Practical Information
Dokkum is five hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Solheim and GJ 442A. The manufacturing council's proportional representation structure reflects economic conditions from forty years ago and the current council's loudest ongoing dispute is whether to revise it. They are working on it.
