THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — BERGTOR
BERGTOR means "mountain gate," which describes the surface geography accurately — elevated rocky massifs, thick crust, the wealth underground — and also, if you are inclined toward metaphor, the relationship between the people who live here and the institutions that manage what they live on top of.
The Rock
Mass — the primary habitable world, shortened by residents from the survey name Bergmass — is a high-density rocky world whose mineral composition is why the Wave 3 founders came. Tungsten, molybdenum, high-temperature refractory ceramics. The concentration is the product of a formation history that stripped away the lighter elements, leaving behind the heavy ones in quantities that MVG has been extracting under contract for two hundred and fifty years.
The K2V primary provides adequate stellar conditions. The surface is cold and thin-atmosphered and geologically inert in a way that makes it excellent for mining and uncomfortable for everything else. The food is synthesized or imported. This is a structural cost of operation, not a complaint.
The Dual Council
Eighty years ago, a labor action shut down the northern massif operations for eleven weeks. The demands included governance representation separate from the extraction cooperative, which had previously managed the settlement as a company town. The residential council was created as a result. It has real authority over working conditions underground. It does not have authority over extraction planning, contract terms, or how long MVG's contracts continue.
The extraction cooperative's council has three MVG-appointed seats under the original charter provisions. The resident-elected majority has numerically more seats but does not have access to the information the MVG-appointed seats hold. Negotiations between these parties proceed accordingly.
MVG's internal geological assessment of the northern massif — conducted eight years ago, not shared with the resident-elected seats — revised the viable extraction horizon downward by approximately sixty years, from a hundred and seventy years to a hundred and ten. The residential council is currently planning infrastructure improvements expected to serve multiple generations of the community. Both documents exist. They are not in the same room.
The Assembly has been asked twice about settlement rights for the permanent population that would provide governance standing in external disputes. Both times, the Assembly found that the existing dual council structure satisfies recognized settlement governance requirements. The residential council disagrees with this interpretation and has been told, politely, that it may continue to disagree.
Practical Information
Bergtor is seven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Eisentor and GJ 454. Everything comes in through Eisentor. Everything goes out through Eisentor. The mining is good. The geology is honest about its limits in ways the contracts are not required to be.
