THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 5
GJ 5 sits between the deep frontier's best unclaimed G-type world and its oldest continuously farmed community, which is a position that attracts a specific kind of speculation without having produced a settlement in the time that speculation has been in circulation.
The Corridor Logic
GJ 524 on one side: exceptional world, five surveys, two centuries of feasibility studies, no expedition funded. Ouplaas on the other: four hundred years of continuous agricultural settlement, sixth-generation farming families, institutional confidence deep enough that they have opinions about what happens to the empty systems in their corridor. GJ 5 in the middle: a K-type habitable world with good agricultural potential, adequate water distribution, stable geology.
The corridor's infrastructure logic writes itself. Ouplaas as supply anchor. GJ 5 as staging point. GJ 524 as the primary agricultural world. The whole corridor potentially becoming the deep frontier's most productive agricultural chain with a fraction of the investment required to develop each system independently. The logic has appeared in settlement proposals periodically for decades and has not yet produced the thing the logic describes.
What Ouplaas Thinks
Ouplaas's residents have opinions about this. Those opinions are not uniform. The older families tend toward the position that empty corridors are what makes the depth comfortable — the community's independence and self-sufficiency have been sustained in part by not being embedded in a larger agricultural network with its attendant dependencies and institutional attention. The younger generation includes voices that find the corridor's emptiness wasteful rather than protective. The discussion is ongoing and considered internal family business.
Four hundred years of agricultural self-sufficiency produces a community that is comfortable with being asked to wait. Proposals that would change GJ 5's status require the practical cooperation of the nearest settled neighbor, whose institutional confidence significantly exceeds that of any funding consortium likely to be organized from the inner corridor.
Practical Information
GJ 5 is eleven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 524 and Ouplaas. The habitable world has good agricultural potential per early survey data. No formal claim has been staked. No expedition has been funded. Ouplaas has opinions.
