Dernier Quai — "last platform" in French — was named by the community that founded it three centuries ago with a specific awareness of what the name implied. There is one gate. One way in, the same way out. Everything that arrives here was intentionally sent, and the system has no transit function at all; it does not sit between two other places, it simply sits at the end. The founders knew this and named the place accordingly, with the wry precision of people who understood exactly what they were committing to.
The community grew off a spur from Port Desrochers (GJ 1005A), the east_reach's major junction. Port Desrochers handles traffic and commerce and institutional weight; Dernier Quai handles none of that. It is a dead_end off a junction — reachable, not en route. The French outpost character that defines the place comes from that original founding cohort and has been maintained in language, cultural practice, and civic architecture across three hundred years. It is not a museum; it is a living inheritance.
The M-dwarf primary is dim and red-shifted, producing the low-light conditions common across this corridor. Three hundred years of agriculture adapted to those conditions have produced a food culture with genuine local character — the kind that gets talked about across the corridor as a reason to make the detour from Port Desrochers.
Supply Dependency
Dernier Quai sources manufactured goods, medical hardware, and specialized components from Port Desrochers, with which it has a long commercial relationship. Its agricultural output — processed food products with established regional reputation — moves back through that same gate as export. The balance is comfortable and has been for over a century.
Faction Notes
The Commission maintains a minimal post — a charter office and a transit log function — staffed by one or two personnel who rotate out every two years and find the assignment either pleasantly quiet or profoundly boring. Local governance sits with a municipal council whose procedures trace back to the original charter instrument.
A French-language cultural association, La Société du Quai, holds significant informal authority in civic life — managing community archives, cultural events, and the kind of dispute resolution that communities prefer to handle without formal institutions. It is older than the Commission post.
Silence Topic
The circumstances under which a founding-era land claim in the eastern agricultural district was transferred to outside ownership approximately forty years ago. The transaction is legally registered. The details of the negotiation are not discussed.
Narrative Hook
A ship has been docked at the system's single transit berth for four months, its crew present and paying berthing fees, its cargo hold sealed with Commission bonding that the local post cannot legally open without authorization from Port Desrochers — authorization that has been requested three times and not issued.
Calibration Note
Wave_3 dead_end at hop 6 off a major junction is consistent with east_reach settlement patterns — established communities founded on spurs during the Trade Expansion era, now stable and culturally distinct.
