THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — DERNIER QUAI
DERNIER QUAI means "last platform," and the community that named it three centuries ago did so with the wry precision of people who understood exactly what they were committing to — one gate, one way in and the same way out, the end of the line off a spur from Port Desrochers.
The Terminal
The founders knew the topology and named the place accordingly. This is rarer than it sounds. Most dead-end communities acquire their character retrospectively, as the implications of the single gate accumulate over generations. Dernier Quai's founders encoded the condition in the name on day one and built a community that had made peace with the constraint before the first building was finished.
Three centuries of French-heritage civic life in a corridor where the broader demographic baseline runs differently have produced a community that is genuinely distinct without being exotic — the kind of distinctiveness that comes from long continuity rather than deliberate preservation. The low-light conditions of an M-dwarf primary have shaped a food culture with regional reputation; people make the detour from Port Desrochers for the gastronomy, which is either a cultural achievement or a measure of how little else there is to see at a dead-end spur, depending on your perspective.
La Société du Quai manages community archives, cultural events, and informal dispute resolution with an authority that predates the Commission post and will probably outlast it. The Commission has a minimal charter office staffed by rotating personnel who find the assignment either pleasantly quiet or profoundly boring.
The Sealed Hold
A ship has been docked at the system's single transit berth for four months. The crew is present and paying berthing fees. The cargo hold is sealed under Commission bonding that the local post cannot legally open without authorization from Port Desrochers. The authorization has been requested three times and not issued.
The cargo is bonded. The seal is legal. The crew is polite, pays its fees, and does not volunteer information. The local post has filed the situation accurately in its logs, which will be reviewed by a rotating field officer at some future date. In the meantime, the berth is occupied, the documentation is current, and Port Desrochers continues to not issue the authorization.
Practical Information
Dernier Quai is six hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Port Desrochers. The agricultural output and food processing industry sustain a comfortable export balance. The founding-era land claim transfer in the eastern agricultural district is legally registered and not discussed.
