GJ 482B | K-type | deep_frontier

The name means "crossing," and the community understands what it is. Travessa exists because the corridor between Posto Avançado and the deep south needed a waypoint, and the people who built it understood their role from the first year of settlement. Two centuries of transit services, freight handling, and the economy of being between two other places have produced a community that is not romantic about its function. They are a crossing. They are good at it.

Supply Dependency

Travessa's economy is transit services. The community does not produce significant agricultural surplus — the habitable world is adequate for local food production and little more. What it produces is throughput: freight handling infrastructure, vessel servicing, cold storage, the bond warehousing and transit documentation that deep frontier freight requires at corridor waypoints.

The dependency is therefore inverted from agricultural systems: Travessa requires steady transit volume to sustain the infrastructure that sustains the community. A corridor disruption that drops traffic below the threshold needed to maintain the transit facilities becomes an existential problem quickly. The community's leadership is acutely aware of this. They maintain relationships with freight operators in both Posto Avançado and Dois Sóis more carefully than most deep frontier communities maintain any institutional relationships, because the health of those relationships is the health of Travessa.

The Syndics have a formal representation at Travessa — a small office that manages freight bond certification and commercial documentation for the corridor. This is unusually structured for a deep frontier system of this size; most corridor waypoints of comparable population manage commercial relationships informally. The formal Syndic representation exists because Travessa's founding cohort included several operators who had previous Syndic affiliations and understood the value of maintaining verifiable commercial standing in the wider Reach even at frontier distances.

The Lattice Commission receives freight documentation from Travessa through the Syndic office's filings. No Commission personnel are stationed here — the corridor's commercial record exists because Travessa files it, not because the Commission collects it. At hop 8, the Commission's authority is nominal and its presence is a line in a registry.

A corridor waypoint at this distance operates under practical oversight that is minimal by any standard. What passes through Travessa's cold storage with incomplete documentation, what transits at off-hours under arrangements that the day-shift operators are not privy to, what the Syndic office's bond records do not reflect — these are questions that no one has asked formally and that the community has developed practiced institutional amnesia about. Travessa does not facilitate contraband by policy. It facilitates it by the structural reality of being a node in a corridor where official oversight is thin and transit documentation is handled by the people being documented.
