THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ORCHARD'S END
ORCHARD'S END is the kind of name that tells you what the founder wanted, and by the possessive, that one person wanted it more than the others. Marta Orchard wanted the furthest good land she could find, found it at hop 14, and planted stone-fruit trees that are visible from orbit during fruiting season.
What One Person With Capital and Conviction Produces
The K2 primary is a good agricultural star. The habitable world sits in the inner habitable zone with a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere that requires no supplemental pressure, surface water in modest but reliable quantities, and soil chemistry rated by the wave-4 survey as "immediately cultivable with standard biological amendment." For a spur-end system at hop 14, this is remarkable. Most deep frontier systems at this distance offer marginal conditions. Orchard's End offers conditions that would be unremarkable at hop 6.
Marta Orchard knew the survey data before she came. She chose this system specifically — the conditions were known, the spur-end topology guaranteed the isolation she wanted, and her founding cooperative charter specified the intent: a self-sustaining agricultural community with no Syndic affiliation, no corporate supply contracts, and no economic dependency that could be leveraged into governance influence from outside. The charter has held for 180 years.
The orchards are adapted stone-fruit cultivars from her family's south_reach holdings, modified for the K2 light spectrum over six generations of selective cultivation. They line the settlement's central valley in rows visible from orbit during fruiting season — a pale amber stripe against the darker native groundcover. The community produces agricultural surplus reliably enough to be a net food exporter, one of the few deep frontier systems where this is true.
The Amendment
Ninety years after founding, Marta Orchard's granddaughter amended the cooperative charter to include any resident completing five years of community labor contribution in the governance structure, alongside the founding landholding families. She recognized that a governance structure limited to founding families would calcify into oligarchy within a few more generations. The amendment is cited in some mid-Reach cooperative governance literature. The community has not sought the citation and would likely find the attention unwelcome.
Practical Information
Orchard's End is fourteen hops from Gateway with two apertures, both connecting to GJ 201 via Errai — spur-end topology, no through traffic, every arrival intentional. The community is welcoming in the way of places that have chosen their isolation and are confident enough in it to be generous to visitors without fearing change. Agricultural goods are available. The founding charter is on record with the Commission. Marta Orchard's name is on the stone markers at the valley's lower boundary.
