THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — NKOSI'S BRIDGE

NKOSI'S BRIDGE completes the circuit that Pemberton's Loop opens — the two Wave 2 transit posts that together make the loop a loop, each performing the same structural function from opposite sides, each named for the person who showed up with a logistics contract and decided not to leave.

The Loop, South Side

Pemberton's Loop connects Wolf 359 to Kampala Gate across the inner arc. Nkosi's Bridge connects Tanegashima to Kampala Gate across the outer arc. The loop exists because both nodes exist. Sipho Nkosi arrived here on a transit logistics contract specifying operational management of the transit post during construction and an initial decade thereafter. The contract did not specify that the Nkosi family would stay for four centuries. "Bridge" was their word for what the system did, and the name calcified before anyone thought to challenge it.

The M7 star is among the coolest and dimmest of any settled system in the Reach — approach from transit is into a system that feels perpetually at dusk. No planet hosts more than a research shelter. The station is the settlement, and it is a larger and more elaborate station than Pemberton's Loop because Nkosi's Bridge carries more differentiated traffic: Tanegashima's fabricated components moving outward, Kampala Gate's import flow moving inward, and the private routing decisions of the freight brokerage that has accumulated network intelligence about all of it for four centuries.

Nkosi Transit & Cargo

The Nkosi family no longer personally manages the transit infrastructure. Corporate entities hold those contracts now. What the family retains is the oldest freight brokerage in the system — a commercial operation with tentacles in nearly every major cargo movement through the loop, whose value lies in knowing what is moving, when, and under what terms.

Tanegashima's fabricators occasionally suspect that their competitors' shipments move faster through Nkosi's Bridge than their own. Proving preferential treatment through a privately held brokerage requires access to internal routing records. A fabrication house recently commissioned an independent audit of shipping times. The auditors went silent two weeks into the engagement.

The formal protocols governing transit contracts at Nkosi's Bridge follow South African commercial law traditions in their structure, even where the specific statutes were revised generations ago. This is either institutional conservatism or the accumulated preference of four centuries of clients who found the structure reliable.

Practical Information

Nkosi's Bridge is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Tanegashima and Kampala Gate. The M7 star produces almost nothing at visible wavelengths. The Assembly maintains an administrative customs office sufficient to administer transit documentation and collect fees, not resourced for enforcement beyond that. The community is mixed, the brokerage is dominant, and the routing intelligence is proprietary.
