THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PASSAGEM

PASSAGEM means "passage" in Portuguese — not the act of arriving, not the act of departing, but the act of moving through — and in four hundred years of wave 2 settlement the community has developed an extremely precise understanding of the difference.

The Through-Route

Two gates. One connects inward to Kaapse Baai's spice cooperative, one outward to Quilombo's self-governing community. Every piece of freight moving between those two worlds, and through them between the inner south Reach and the outer corridor, passes through Passagem's gate infrastructure. The Transit Cooperative manages it on a documented first-come basis and has resisted every attempt by both adjacent systems to negotiate preferential scheduling terms. This neutrality is not idealistic. It is the community's most valuable institutional asset, and the management has been careful not to compromise it because compromising it would immediately benefit one neighbor at the cost of alienating the other, and alienating either neighbor would be economically catastrophic in ways the alternatives would not compensate for.

The founding Cape Malay and Angolan-Portuguese families came four hundred years ago from the same emigration corridor that seeded Kaapse Baai and Confluência, and they have spent the intervening time positioned between the Cape Malay aesthetic of one adjacent system and the Afro-Brazilian self-governance tradition of the other. The cuisine that resulted from four centuries of absorbing both culinary traditions without fully committing to either is the community's most visible cultural product. It has been described as a fusion and objected to by Passagem's residents, who consider it simply local.

The Records

The Transit Cooperative's manifest records constitute a complete commercial history of this corridor for four hundred years — who ships what, in what quantities, on what schedules, through which commercial relationships. The cooperative maintains these records as operational data. They have never been requested by any external body, and the cooperative has never offered them. The data management policy does not address whether the dataset could be shared, because no one has written that policy. The absence is not accidental. The Layover Services Guild, which manages hospitality and maintenance for through-route crews, maintains a separate institutional culture of discretion: what happens during layover at Passagem is not discussed. This is valued by crews and contributes to the system's reputation as a reliable and unremarkable waypoint, which is the reputation a through-route community needs and which takes generations to earn.

Practical Information

Passagem is six hops from Gateway with two gate apertures — through-route between Kaapse Baai and Quilombo. The dM5.5eJ primary flares on its standard schedule and produces the deep twilight sky that close-orbit M-dwarf worlds provide. Assembly inspectors pass through regularly on their way to and from outer systems. The cooperative's compliance records are complete and accessible. The manifest archives are operational data.
