| Population | — |
Steinfeld was settled approximately three hundred years ago. The name is German and plain: "stone field." The founders were describing the planet from orbit before they landed, and the description remained accurate enough that no one saw cause to change it later. The world is a K0IV subgiant's habitable zone companion — the star is old and slightly evolved, burning warmer than a standard K0 main sequence object, which places the habitable zone at greater orbital distance and produces a planet that receives orange-tinged light at low angles for most of the day cycle. The effect at the settlement's altitude — Steinfeld's population centers are in highland zones — is a quality of late-afternoon light that lasts most of the day, stone surfaces saturated in amber and amber-grey.
The planet is rocky, high, and cold above the equatorial valleys. The primary geology is exposed sedimentary and metamorphic rock across the highland ranges, with minimal topsoil at altitude — the kind of world where the land tells you immediately what it is and what it is good for. What it is good for is stone. The quarrying operation at Steinfeld has been cutting construction aggregate and finished stone block from the same mountain ranges for three centuries, working through multiple generations of ownership that have all converged on the same conclusion: the deposit base is large enough that the question of exhaustion is academic, and the quality consistency of Steinfeld stone — a dense grey-blue metamorphic type called Bergquarz locally — has made it a recognized material in inner-corridor construction markets.
The freight route through GJ 505A carries Steinfeld aggregate inward. Most of what leaves the planet is bulk aggregate — cut block, crushed stone, graded construction material. A smaller volume is finished architectural stone, cut to specification for customers in the inner corridor who want the look of genuine Steinfeld Bergquarz rather than a synthetic substitute. The distinction matters to some buyers. The stone has been in enough prominent structures over three centuries that it carries a reputation.
The settlement's character is shaped by the industry it serves. Quarrying is slow, physical, structural work — it does not attract the transient population a mining boom would, and it does not generate the economic volatility that extraction industries can produce when deposit quality varies. Steinfeld has had approximately the same population for the last hundred years, has approximately the same institutional arrangements, and will probably have approximately the same situation in another hundred years. The community is not stagnant — it maintains its infrastructure, educates its children, handles its disputes — but it is not growing and does not expect to. This is understood as stability rather than failure.
Supply Dependency
Steinfeld is moderately self-sufficient. The equatorial valleys support agriculture under the K0IV star's warmth, producing enough food surplus to cover the highland settlements without heavy import dependency. Inbound freight through GJ 505A carries manufactured goods, specialist equipment for the quarrying operation, and a variety of consumer goods that the settlement produces too little population to manufacture locally. The freight relationship is old and reliable — the same transit cooperative that handles Steinfeld's aggregate outbound brings the manufactured goods inbound, and the scheduling has been coordinated for long enough that both sides treat it as a fixed arrangement.
Outbound: Bergquarz aggregate in bulk construction grades, finished architectural stone cut to inner-corridor specifications, and a small volume of precision-ground stone components used in mechanical and optical applications that require dimensional stability — a niche product that Steinfeld developed in the last century when a geological survey identified a zone of unusually consistent crystal structure in the deep quarry levels.
Faction Notes
No Commission post. The aperture transit facility is operated by the Steinfeld Stone Cooperative, which is also the primary quarrying authority and the effective local government. The Cooperative was formed from the merger of three founding family operations approximately a hundred and twenty years ago, after a dispute over freight pricing that threatened to strand all three independently. The settlement charter grants the Cooperative administrative authority over transit, resource management, and civic infrastructure. Assembly representation is a formal role held by the Cooperative's elected chair, with actual engagement limited to filing routine reports.
The precision stone component operation — a separate business entity within the Cooperative called Tiefquarz Feinbearbeitung — has a different character from the bulk quarrying operation: smaller, more technically demanding, with a staff that has more contact with inner-corridor buyers and more awareness of the broader market. This creates occasional friction within the Cooperative between the bulk operation's conservative planning culture and Tiefquarz's more outward-facing orientation.
Silence Topic
The original survey maps. Steinfeld's founding survey identified the exploitable geology and recommended settlement. A standard survey would have covered the full planetary surface. The areas of the planet not included in the quarrying concession — the northern continent, which the founding documents describe only as "unsuitable for settlement and resource extraction" without elaboration — have not been resurveyed. No one has applied for a survey license. The northern continent is not discussed.
Narrative Hook
A precision stone component from a Tiefquarz Feinbearbeitung shipment was found in a device recovered from a derelict vessel near GJ 505A — a device whose function no one has been able to identify.
Calibration Note
The K0IV subgiant classification produces a slightly unusual illumination regime for the planet — the evolved star's different luminosity profile compared to a standard K0V shifts the habitable zone outward and affects seasonal dynamics. The amber-light character described is a direct consequence of the subgiant's spectral output at this orbital distance. Wave_3 settlement at hop 8 reflects the deep corridor position — Steinfeld was reached as the inner corridor expanded and established the hop-by-hop chain through GJ 505A.
