THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — STEINFELD
STEINFELD means "stone field," which the founders were describing from orbit before they landed, and which remained accurate enough that three hundred years of subsequent residents have seen no reason to change it.
The Stone
The K0IV subgiant burns evolved and warm, producing a planet whose highland surfaces are bathed in amber-tinged late-afternoon light for most of the day cycle. The effect on Bergquarz — the dense grey-blue metamorphic stone the quarrying operation produces — is notable: the light saturates the surfaces in ways that make the finished product look different in photographs than in person, which has become a selling point for architects in the inner corridor who specify it for that quality specifically.
Three centuries of quarrying have worked through multiple generations of ownership that all converged on the same conclusion: the deposit base is large enough that the question of exhaustion is academic. The Steinfeld Stone Cooperative runs the quarrying, manages the aperture transit facility, and holds administrative authority over civic infrastructure under a settlement charter that grants it all three. The community is not growing and does not expect to. This is understood as stability rather than failure, which is a distinction worth making precisely because many communities cannot make it.
The precision stone component operation — Tiefquarz Feinbearbeitung, a separate entity within the Cooperative — produces dimensional stone for mechanical and optical applications. The staff has more contact with inner-corridor buyers than the bulk quarrying side and a more outward-facing orientation, which creates occasional friction with the bulk operation's conservative planning culture. A precision stone component from a Tiefquarz shipment was recently found in a device recovered from a derelict vessel near GJ 505A. The device's function has not been identified.
The Northern Continent
The founding survey identified the exploitable geology and recommended settlement. The areas of the planet not included in the quarrying concession — specifically the northern continent, described in founding documents only as "unsuitable for settlement and resource extraction" without elaboration — have not been resurveyed. No survey license has been applied for. The northern continent is not discussed.
Practical Information
Steinfeld is eight hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to Bergtor. The amber light on stone surfaces is genuinely beautiful if you are interested in that kind of thing. The Cooperative is not interested in questions about what those founding survey teams were describing.
