Its three gates connect inward toward Hansestadt via GJ 502, and outward to GJ 302 and GJ 1248 — a junction role that made it commercially significant before it was politically significant. The system's industrial base produces precision components for the mining equipment used throughout the outer west, which means its economic relationships run in both directions along the corridor: raw materials flow in from the frontier, finished components flow back out toward Hansestadt and the core.

The name means "free holding" in the founding generation's working German — not a translation of any Earth place but a statement of intent. The founders, who arrived in Wave 4 from an inner-west mining community whose company was absorbed by MVG, chose the name as a deliberate rejection of that absorption. Freiholt would be held by its people. This founding principle is not decorative. It shapes every significant governance decision the system has made in its hundred and fifty years of existence, including the decision to sign the Compact of Westphalia approximately sixty years after settlement, when the Compact's organizing council made its first formal approach.

Freiholt is a Compact of Westphalia signatory and one of its more politically active members. The system's governor — currently Hedvig Straumsnes, a third-generation Freiholt native who holds the position by election and has held it for thirty-two years — sits on the Compact's rotating council. She is not the Compact's most prominent figure, but she is among its most practically effective: she handles the commercial treaty negotiations that keep the Compact's internal tariff arrangement functioning, which is the organizational work that less visible members depend on.

Local governance is a cooperative republic — all major industries are worker-owned, capital decisions are made by elected sector councils, and the governor is an executive who implements rather than directs. This governance model is typical of the west_reach cooperative tradition and is precisely the kind of local arrangement the Compact was designed to protect from Assembly regulatory pressure. The Assembly has, on two occasions, initiated regulatory review proceedings against Freiholt's industrial licensing structure on the basis that it does not conform to Assembly commercial standards. On both occasions, the proceedings were eventually withdrawn. The Assembly's calculus each time was that the confrontation cost more in political capital than the compliance gain was worth. Freiholt's council regards this as a validation of the Compact's deterrence function.

The Gate Corporation maintains the three apertures under standard service contracts that Freiholt has always paid punctually. The Compact's position on Gate Corporation service is consistent and explicit: gate infrastructure is neutral, and neutrality must be preserved. Freiholt does not make the Gate Corporation's presence uncomfortable because the Gate Corporation's presence is not what the Compact is about.

The Compact's mutual recognition framework means Freiholt's trading partners within the Compact are not subject to Assembly export review. What leaves the Compact's internal market from there is the commercial matter of the receiving systems. Freiholt's council is aware that some of its output reaches operators whose extraction practices and labor conditions it would not approve. The council's position is that policing downstream use is not their responsibility. This position is internally contested.
