THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — FREIHOLT
FREIHOLT means "free holding" — not a translation of any Earth place but a statement of intent, chosen by Wave 4 founders who had just watched their previous community absorbed by MVG and were naming the new one accordingly.
The Junction
Three gates at the heart of the Compact of Westphalia's operational territory. One back toward Hansestadt via GJ 502. Two outward, toward GJ 302 and GJ 1248. A junction role that gave Freiholt commercial significance before it had political significance, and political significance shortly after. Assembly trade observers pass through Freiholt's gates twice a month. The governor has been negotiating a Compact commercial treaty for three years that would, if ratified, create a west_reach internal market large enough to make Assembly economic integration genuinely optional. These two facts coexist in the same scheduling queue.
The founding principle — "held by its people" — is not decorative. It shapes every governance decision the cooperative republic has made in a hundred and fifty years. The Assembly has initiated regulatory review proceedings against Freiholt's industrial licensing structure twice, on the basis that it does not conform to Assembly commercial standards. Both times, the Assembly withdrew. The confrontation cost more in political capital than the compliance gain was worth. Freiholt's council regards this as a validation of the Compact's deterrence function. This is probably an accurate reading.
The Governor
Hedvig Straumsnes. Third generation. Elected, currently in her thirty-second year in the position. She is not the Compact's most prominent figure but she is among its most practically effective, because she handles the commercial treaty negotiations that less visible Compact members depend on and she does not seek attention for doing so. The Assembly's west_reach trade delegate has a professional relationship with her that is courteous, accurate, and thoroughly unresolved.
The Equipment
Freiholt's precision components for mining equipment move outward through GJ 1248 into commercial channels that are not closely tracked after they leave the Compact's internal market. The Compact's mutual recognition framework means Freiholt's partners within the Compact are not subject to Assembly export review. What those partners do with the equipment is, under the council's established position, their commercial matter rather than Freiholt's. The council is aware that some of its output reaches operators whose labor practices and extraction conditions it would not endorse. The council's position is that policing downstream use is not their responsibility. This position is internally contested, and that internal contest produced the founding ideological faction that eventually left for Nyrheim, which is not a resolution so much as a change in where the argument is happening.
Practical Information
Freiholt is seven hops from Gateway with three apertures connecting to GJ 502, GJ 302, and GJ 1248. The Gate Corporation is paid punctually. Neutrality of gate infrastructure is a Compact principle and Freiholt honors it.
