THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GROOMBRIDGE 1830
GROOMBRIDGE 1830 retained its catalog name, which is the kind of thing that happens to wave 4 settlements that arrive at a junction position with a G8 sub-dwarf primary and no particular founding aspiration beyond connecting the systems around them.
The Junction
Three gates. The G8Vp primary — a slightly metal-poor variant, the "p" marking a peculiar spectral composition — is warmer and steadier than the M-dwarfs that characterize the surrounding outer south Reach, and the habitable zone offers surface conditions that the wave 4 founding generation found workable rather than inspiring. They built transit infrastructure. They built the support services that transit infrastructure requires. They did not give the system a name that made a statement about who they were, because the function was the statement.
The three apertures connect to Moçâmedes inward — the M7 underground greenhouse community that exports specialty greens toward the inner ring — and outward to Aguas Bravas and GJ 902. The junction position means Groombridge 1830 handles freight from one of the outer south Reach's most specialized producers and routes it toward corridors that continue beyond. The community has become, in two hundred years of wave 4 settlement, fluent in what Moçâmedes grows and what the systems beyond it need, and has built its logistics operations around that specific commercial knowledge.
What Gets Lost in Transmission
The things not discussed at Groombridge 1830 are the things that pass through it. A through-junction that handles premium specialty cargo from one direction and general freight from two others accumulates commercial knowledge about pricing, timing, and the relationships between producers and their markets. The people who work in freight handling know things about the communities they connect that those communities do not share with each other. This is normal for transit systems. It is particularly noticeable at Groombridge 1830, where the community's institutional silence on commercial matters has been described by Moçâmedes' cooperative as "professional" and by Aguas Bravas freight operators as "convenient" — two characterizations that are probably both accurate.
Practical Information
Groombridge 1830 is six hops from Gateway with three gate apertures — junction connecting Moçâmedes, Aguas Bravas, and GJ 902. Wave 4. The G8Vp primary offers pleasant enough surface conditions. The transit services are reliable and unremarkable in the way that transit services at competent junctions are unremarkable.
