THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MURAKAMI'S LANTERN
MURAKAMI'S LANTERN is forty years old, located at the end of a single-gate dead end seven hops from Gateway, built on a world with seismic cycles that the original survey flagged as "manageable" and which the people living on it have since reclassified as "foundational constraint," which is the same information expressed in different registers of commitment.
The Survey
Kenji Murakami described the binary system as "two points of light so close they resolve into one at approach distance, like a lantern held at the end of a long corridor." He died on the return transit, three years before the first colonists departed. The settlers named it for him in the tradition of honoring people whose work made theirs possible, and kept the "Lantern" because the description was accurate and the name had already traveled inward in his survey report.
The seismic cycling that the colonists discovered in their first year was detectable in the original six-week orbital observation data. The colony's engineers established this by reviewing the survey materials in the colony archive. Whether the survey team missed it, downplayed it to secure authorization, or flagged it in a report that was edited before filing is something the Founding Council has not pursued, partly because Murakami is dead and partly because the answer would not change the cycles.
The Construction Timeline
Twelve thousand people in reinforced surface installations and a partially-completed orbital habitat. The orbital habitat is scheduled for completion in approximately eight years, a timeline that has slipped four times. The Engineers' Collective sometimes knows a plan will not work before the Founding Council has finished authorizing it, which is a form of institutional tension that communities under structural stress manage with varying success.
The supply chain is six or more hops long and thin. The Assembly's presence is a quarterly signal packet and a three-year-old standing authorization for emergency resource assistance if requested. The colonists know the assistance would take at least a year to arrive. Requesting it would require admitting publicly that the situation warranted it. No request has been filed.
Practical Information
Murakami's Lantern is seven hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Dài Lộ. The Murakami Memorial Society maintains the historical record. In a community forty years old, history and living memory overlap significantly. The Founding Council is in its second generation of membership. The seismic cycles continue on their schedule.
