THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — TORSBY
TORSBY was named for a Swedish town in Värmland — not a direct transplant but a deliberate echo, the difference between "this is where I'm from" and "this is what home sounds like," which is a distinction that founding families with genuine homesickness know precisely.
The Thermal Advantage
The G3/G5V binary provides Torsby with something unusual in this stretch of the corridor: stable thermal conditions suited to precision manufacturing. Red dwarfs flicker and flare in ways that interfere with the tolerances that precision fabrication requires. The binary's combined and moderately stable output gives Torsby's manufacturing cooperatives an environmental argument for their product quality that M-dwarf neighbors cannot match. They have used this argument well. The passenger compartment fittings that MVG buys here are not the highest-value contract in the corridor, but they are consistent and they have been consistent for two hundred years.
The Lindqvist family led the Wave 4 founding charter and held the majority of the initial land grants for two generations. Their descendants remain prominent in local manufacturing. Whether this reflects the competence that justified the charter or the institutional advantage that the charter created is a live debate in Torsby, where the industrial council's Lindqvist bloc holds two of seven seats and the question of how that came to be continues to generate commentary in the council sessions the Lindqvists attend.
The Patent
The Lindqvist family's oldest working cooperative holds a patent on a bearing assembly used in gate ferry drive systems. The patent is Assembly-registered and nominally enforceable across the Reach. Compact-affiliated operators have been producing compatible copies without license for several years. The copies are improving.
Filing an enforcement action would require formally invoking Assembly jurisdiction in a commercial dispute. Torsby's industrial council's standard answer to political questions is that manufacturing systems need customers in both directions — Assembly-aligned and Compact-aligned. This answer, which is the council's genuine position, is also exactly the answer a community with an eroding patent in Assembly-registered intellectual property would give if it had decided not to press the point. The Lindqvist cooperative has not filed. The patent is narrowing in practice while remaining intact on paper. How long these two facts can coexist depends on how much better the copies get.
Practical Information
Torsby is six hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Dokkum and GJ 3737. The council has not voted on Compact membership and shows no urgency to do so. The Dokkum connection keeps one commercial foot in the inner corridor; the GJ 3737 connection keeps the other facing outward. This is a functional position that the industrial council intends to maintain for as long as the patent question does not force a resolution.
