THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — RELAY 7
RELAY 7 is the seventh waystation in a corporate freight catalog, which is not a name so much as a file reference — and it is a file reference because, three centuries ago, a community of residents discovered a charter provision that the acquiring company had not read carefully enough, and used it to win a naming dispute.
The Designation
The preceding six relays were renamed or absorbed into larger commercial identities as the east corridor matured. Relay 7 was not. The official explanation — to the extent there is one — is that the community simply prefers functional clarity to sentiment. The actual explanation is in the Yongli Combine's predecessor corporate archive, accessible only to those with archive credentials: the original relay charter gave the resident population naming authority, a provision the corporate entity had not noticed when it acquired the contract, and which the community produced at exactly the right moment in a wave_3 commercial dispute. The corporate entity dropped the rebranding effort without explanation in the public record. The community kept their name.
The Combine has been careful, in every subsequent founding charter it has participated in, to ensure that provision does not appear again. This is documented in the Combine's own internal policy records. The fact that the lesson was learned from Relay 7 is not.
The Staging Function
The two-gate loop connects Relay 7 to Haodu and Devereux Point. The system's commercial function today is what it was in wave_2: staging, repackaging, and forwarding freight that needs to change container format, adjust documentation, or wait for a connection slot in Haodu's congested gate schedule. No primary exports. The population is large enough to run the facilities and small enough that expansion would require a commercial reason that has not materialized in three centuries.
The Transit Operations Board runs efficiently because the system is not complex enough to require complicated governance. The Commission has a registration officer but no enforcement presence. The most recent Assembly delegate visit was over a decade ago. The most recent gate throughput figures are current and accurate, because the Board runs the freight documentation as a commercial matter independent of any institutional pressure.
Practical Information
Relay 7 is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Devereux Point and Haodu. The K0 primary provides adequate energy for the staging operation. The residents find the name either amusing or mildly uncomfortable depending on whether they work for a Combine-affiliated contractor. Neither group is changing it.
