Mirante means lookout point in Portuguese — elevated terrain, a place from which you can see what approaches and what recedes. The name fits the topology precisely. GJ 435 sits between Espinho at the dead end and Encrucijada at the hub, the middle position on a three-system spur. From Mirante's horizon station you can see, in the transit log sense, everything moving to and from Espinho, and you can see everything moving between Espinho and the wider Reach that routes through the Encrucijada connection. The community that built here three hundred years ago understood the position they were taking.
The K5V star at 40.4 light-years is cool and orange, the kind of star that provides sufficient luminosity for habitation without the warmth that makes G-type worlds easy. The founding families were Portuguese and Brazilian — wave_3 settlers with agricultural and light-industrial backgrounds who chose this position because the surveys showed habitability and because the two apertures meant Mirante would not be a dead-end in the way that Espinho would eventually become. The shift in Encrucijada's status forty years ago — from empty system to active hub — changed Mirante's position meaningfully. Before Encrucijada was settled, Mirante's inward connection ran through a more complex chain; after Encrucijada became a hub, Mirante sits one hop from a five-aperture junction. The freight volume moving through Mirante's two apertures has increased, and the logistics services that Mirante provides have grown to match. The founding families' descendants are running an operation that is larger and more complex than the founding generation built for, but the skill set is the same one that has been maintained and transmitted over three centuries, and the operations have scaled without significant structural change.
Commission presence is the standard outer-reach schedule: infrequent rotating inspections, no permanent presence. Mirante's compliance record is clean and detailed, which reflects both genuine practice and the community's awareness that its transit function means any irregularity that surfaces in the freight data will eventually attract Commission attention.
Supply Dependency
Mirante exports agricultural products to Espinho (which is more arid and imports a portion of its food supply) and logistics services to both connected systems. Secondary exports include light-manufactured goods — primarily equipment components and maintenance supplies for the Espinho observatory systems and for the transit infrastructure at Encrucijada. Imports are manufactured goods and technical equipment that the local industrial base cannot produce. The trade balance is slightly positive: Mirante collects transit service fees from the freight moving between Espinho and Encrucijada, which supplements the agricultural export revenue.
The community's agricultural expertise in K5V conditions has produced techniques adapted to lower-luminosity growing conditions that other K-type settlements have occasionally licensed. The transit log that Mirante maintains for Commission compliance records all freight movements through its two apertures. The community also maintains a secondary internal log that records transit patterns at a finer level of detail than the Commission-required records — freight consolidation patterns, routing choices, timing correlations between Espinho-outbound and Encrucijada-inbound movements. This internal log was established as an operational tool and has been maintained continuously for two centuries. It contains, without the community having intended to build it, a historical record of freight flow patterns through this part of the south_reach that is more detailed than anything in any Commission database. No one outside Mirante knows it exists.
Narrative Hook
The internal transit log's two-century record shows a pattern — irregular, separated by gaps of several years, but consistent enough to be recognizable to the cooperative member who found it while reviewing old records for a capacity planning exercise — in which a specific type of freight movement through the Espinho-to-Encrucijada corridor appeared in tight clusters following significant political or economic events in the inner reach, as though someone with access to advance information was using the outer-reach corridor to move assets before the events became public.
Calibration Note
K5V at 40.4 light-years is cool enough to require specific agricultural adaptation, which is consistent with the knowledge-export detail and the founding families' experience with K-type conditions. Spur_end with 2 apertures at hop 8 is the middle-position topology that makes Mirante's transit service role natural: a system between a dead-end and a hub, with enough traffic to sustain a logistics operation but not enough to constitute a hub itself.
