THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KAUR'S OBSERVATORY

KAUR'S OBSERVATORY is not an official name — no governing authority has ever formally assigned it — but it appears on transit booking systems because researchers returning from this position needed a short way to say "that very good seeing position at GJ 432A" and Dr. Harjinder Kaur's catalog is what made the seeing position famous, and the transit booking systems are indifferent to formal authority.

The Instrument

GJ 432A has no permanent population. It has the Kaur Survey Platform: a long-axis research installation at the system's L4 point, staffed by rotating crews of forty to eighty researchers on appointments rarely exceeding eighteen months. The station is administered as an instrument, not a settlement. The K0V primary does not flood the surrounding system with ultraviolet interference. The system is sparse — no gas giants, no significant debris disk. Researchers describe the electromagnetic background as quiet, meaning the noise floor is unusually low for a populated corridor position, meaning the data produced here cannot easily be replicated from inward platforms.

Dr. Kaur's original catalog methodology — systematic, exhaustive, annotated with uncertainty flags rather than cleaned for presentability — is still the house style. The platform is funded by a consortium of universities and research institutions across the east reach and inner corridor. Budget instability at any major funding institution produces visible operational strain within one to two cycles, which is not a hypothetical: the current director has spent four years of her second term managing a funding dispute that has delayed a planned detector array upgrade.

The Dataset

The archive contains an anomalous signal dataset: non-repeating broadband pulses recorded over a fourteen-month observing window, catalogued under a routine number, never formally analyzed or published. The original observation team flagged it for follow-up. The follow-up was never assigned. Three researchers who independently found it in the archive were each quietly discouraged from pursuing formal analysis by platform leadership. The reasons have never been stated explicitly. One of those researchers has not been heard from since leaving the platform.

The Port Desrochers Supply Authority holds the resupply contract and receives survey data on a ninety-day embargo advantage over other corridor recipients. This arrangement is technically within the consortium's disclosure rules. It is widely resented by consortium members who were not consulted when it was agreed, and is the most legible power relationship in an institution that generally runs on funding cycles and publication prestige.

Practical Information

Kaur's Observatory is six hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Port Desrochers and Chandra Deep. The platform resupply routes through Port Desrochers. Precision optical components route through Chandra Deep. The anomalous signal dataset is in the archive under a routine catalog number, which is where things go when someone wants them accessible without being found.
