THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — LAM'S PROSPECT
LAM'S PROSPECT is named after a surveyor's phrase — "prospective resource value, pending extraction assessment" — which three hundred years of subsequent history have proven accurate in the most qualified sense: the resource value existed, and it has been extracted at a rate that the current generation will eventually have to confront.
The Dead End
One gate. One neighbor. Eighty thousand people in asteroid belt infrastructure and a marginally habitable moon colony, descended from 600 founders whose surnames a genealogist could still trace in the current population records. Three centuries of limited immigration will preserve a cultural substrate more reliably than any policy document. Lam's Prospect speaks a Vietnamese-inflected creole that linguists find fascinating and outsiders find impenetrable, maintains New Year traditions with a specificity that would surprise the corridor's more cosmopolitan hubs, and names its children from a restricted pool.
The Resource Council debates extraction quotas and maintenance schedules. Ideology requires alternatives, and alternatives require more options than a dead end provides.
The Output Reports
Lam's Prospect's annual production reports, filed with the Assembly's Resource Monitoring Division, show stable output figures that have not meaningfully declined in forty years. Independent analysis — which requires comparing the filed figures against shipping manifests at GJ 635B, a cross-referencing task that nobody outside the system normally bothers to perform — suggests that actual extraction output has been declining for at least twenty-five years and the reported figures are being smoothed.
What the Resource Council is covering and why is not publicly known. The long-range planning documents, which are internal, show a declining margin that the next generation will have to solve. The Young Prospect, an informal movement among residents under thirty, has been arguing for fifteen years that the community should petition for transit infrastructure investment rather than continue deferring the question. The Resource Council's position is that the petition would be denied and the attempt would signal weakness. This position has been held for fifteen years while the extraction margin declines.
Practical Information
Lam's Prospect is six hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Clearwater Station. The Lam Foundation maintains the cultural archive and genealogical records. The Founder's Day ceremony marks the anniversary of Thanh Van Lam's survey filing, not the settlement date, because the community prefers to count from when the possibility was identified. The possibility has been pending for three hundred years.
