Supply Dependency

Suzhou imports most of what it consumes and exports almost none of what it produces, by design. The system's academic institutions publish research — theoretical materials science, low-temperature chemistry, and the increasingly specialized field of stable-orbit astrophysics enabled by the M-dwarf's quiet variability during its periodic emission cycles — but research outputs are not freight. Equipment arrives, scholars arrive, grants arrive. The system's one outward dependency is its gate connection to Matsue (GJ 687), through which all physical supply moves. The academic community at Suzhou has spent considerable institutional energy ensuring that Matsue's manufacturing interests do not extend to influencing Suzhou's research agendas in exchange for supply reliability.

The local economy is small, deliberate, and sufficient. Agricultural terraria provide food. The population is stable rather than growing. There is no corporate extraction presence and no aspiration for one.

Faction Notes

Suzhou's founding community was a consortium of academic institutions that petitioned the Assembly in wave_4 for a dead_end system designation specifically because dead_end topology would limit commercial traffic and protect research conditions. The petition was granted; the academic consortium became the de facto governance body; that arrangement has persisted for the better part of two centuries.

The Veil Institute has an affiliate research station at Suzhou, drawn by the combination of institutional independence and the specific research conditions the M6 Ve star's emission characteristics enable. The affiliate's presence is cooperative rather than controlling — the founding academic consortium retains governance authority, and the Veil Institute's interest is in data access and talent pipeline, not administrative authority. The relationship is collegial and occasionally tense: Veil Institute priorities are not always academically pure, and the founding institutions' governance council has twice formally declined research proposals that would have redirected their telescope infrastructure toward Institute-specific monitoring objectives.

The Lattice Commission maintains a minimal registration presence — a single compliance officer who also handles gate maintenance scheduling. Assembly authority here is structural and largely invisible.

Silence Topic

What the academic community does not discuss publicly: the telescope network's secondary function.

The orbital telescope array at Suzhou is the most capable low-frequency observation platform within four hops of the core, positioned specifically because the M6 Ve star's emission signature is narrow enough to permit observation windows that would be contaminated by more active stars. Its published research outputs are genuine. But the array's pointing schedule also includes regular observations toward certain deep-reach systems that have nothing to do with the published research programs. Who authorized those pointing schedules, and whose data they serve, is not recorded in any document the founding consortium's governance council has seen.

Narrative Hook

The orbital telescope array that drew Suzhou's academic community to this dead_end system has a second pointing schedule that no one on the governance council authorized and no one has been able to trace to a principal.

Calibration Note

dead_end topology at hop 3 with wave_4 settlement is consistent with deliberate late development: the founding consortium chose a system that commercial settlement had passed over because it offered no obvious extraction or transit value. The M6 Ve star's flare-star classification would have discouraged most commercial Wave 3 operators. The academic community arrived in wave_4 specifically because the system had been skipped. Chinese heritage predominates in the founding institutions — Suzhou is a transplanted place-name from Jiangsu province — though the research staff is cross-corridor in the usual way of academic environments.
