Marunong translates from Filipino as "skilled" or "knowing" — a name that the Wave 3 founders chose with specific intent, because the community they were building would live by skill in water. The primary world is a warm ocean planet: few landmasses, most of them volcanic in origin and ongoing, a shallow shelf zone around the volcanic archipelagoes that is biologically productive in ways that the founders immediately recognized as exploitable. The sea is warm. The fish-analog population is dense. The volcanic vents seed the shallow shelves with mineral nutrients that keep the ecology active year-round.
Three hundred years later, the skill the founders promised is evident. Marunong's aquaculture system is one of the more technically sophisticated in the east reach corridor, built around a practice of species management that is less extraction than cultivation — the distinction between "fishing" and "farming" has collapsed here over centuries into a single discipline that practitioners simply call pag-alaga, meaning caretaking or tending. Marunong's caretakers manage populations across thousands of kilometers of shallow shelf, monitoring yield, adjusting stocking density, managing the interaction between farmed species and wild populations in a way that has kept overall productivity increasing for two centuries.
The G0Ve star — slightly more active than the Sun, with emission variability in the UV range — drove early investment in radiation monitoring and atmospheric chemistry management that became a secondary technical specialty. Marunong now exports both aquaculture products and the monitoring equipment and methodology that the aquaculture work required. Ships passing through the through-route regularly purchase calibration services; the gate facility at Marunong has a monitoring equipment workshop that handles transit vessel maintenance alongside local system needs.
The volcanic mineral extraction industry operates as an adjunct to aquaculture rather than a separate economic sector. The same volcanic systems that seed the shallow shelves with nutrients also produce mineral concentrations in the archipelago geology; Marunong's operators extract these under the same pag-alaga framework — with attention to the ecosystem effects of extraction, not just the extraction yield. This has made Marunong somewhat slower to build extraction output than a purely commercial approach would have, and considerably more sustainable.
The two apertures connect to Whitfield Crossing (GJ 3135) and Songjiang (GJ 625). Marunong functions as a mid-corridor waypoint on this route and receives a modest but consistent transit-service income from vessels traversing between those two systems.
Supply Dependency
Marunong is largely self-sufficient in protein and a significant portion of its carbohydrate and vegetable needs, derived from the aquaculture system and the limited agricultural areas on the larger volcanic islands. Technical equipment for aquaculture monitoring — sensor arrays, processing equipment, vessel components — is sourced from inward corridor suppliers through either Whitfield Crossing or Songjiang depending on price. The transit income partially offsets these imports.
Faction Notes
The Caretakers' Guild is the professional and governing body for the pag-alaga practitioners. It controls operational licensing for all aquaculture zones, manages the species management protocols, and enforces the ecosystem standards that the whole system depends on. Membership is competitive and the training period is long; Guild certification takes eight to twelve years and cannot be shortcut. The Guild's authority to deny or revoke operational licenses gives it formal power that the elected council does not override lightly.
The Volcanic Operations Consortium represents the mineral extraction operators. The Consortium and the Guild have a working relationship characterized by the Guild's effective veto over Consortium operations in ecologically sensitive zones, which the Consortium accepts because the alternative — operating outside the Guild's framework — would result in loss of access to the shelf zones where the productive extraction sites are located.
The Transit Services Authority manages the gate facility, calibration workshop, and transit hostel. It is smaller than either the Guild or the Consortium in institutional weight, but its control over the gate facility means it is the first point of contact for any off-system actor doing business at Marunong.
Silence Topic
The Caretakers' Guild's species management data — the biological and ecological records that underpin the shelf zone protocols — contains a multi-year dataset showing declining recruitment rates in a specific shallow-shelf species that forms a significant part of the aquaculture output. The Guild's senior ecologists have been monitoring the trend for eleven years. Their current working hypothesis is that the G0Ve star's emission variability is driving a slow shift in water chemistry that the current species mix cannot fully adapt to. The Guild has not published this analysis, has not informed the council, and is working on a managed species-mix transition that would take fifteen to twenty years to implement. The public knows the managed transition is being discussed. It does not know why.
Narrative Hook
A Caretakers' Guild trainee completing her thesis research in the shelf zone ecology models encounters the restricted dataset and begins to understand that the transition her senior mentors are planning is not a routine improvement program but an emergency response to a trend that, unaddressed, would collapse the shelf zone productivity within a generation.
Calibration Note
The READ-ONLY System Profile classifies GJ 423A as G0Ve, making G-type the correct header designation; the briefing listed M-type but the profile data takes precedence. A G0Ve star is a slightly active solar analog, which is reflected in the UV emission variability discussed in the overview and used as the basis for the Silence Topic's ecological pressure mechanism. Through_route with 2 apertures at hop 7 is consistent with the described function as a mid-corridor waypoint. Wave_3 Filipino heritage in a warm volcanic ocean world is a natural fit with Pacific maritime cultivation traditions.
