THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MARUNONG
MARUNONG means "skilled" or "knowing" in Filipino, which the Wave 3 founders chose because they were going to live by skill in water, and three hundred years later the skill they promised is clearly visible in a shelf aquaculture system so technically sophisticated that the distinction between fishing and farming collapsed into a single discipline called pag-alaga — caretaking, tending — somewhere around the second generation.
The Caretakers
The warm ocean world, the volcanic archipelagoes, the shallow shelves seeded with mineral nutrients by the same vents that make the geology commercially interesting. The Eleven-Year Trend
The Caretakers' Guild's species management data contains a multi-year dataset showing declining recruitment rates in a specific shallow-shelf species that forms a significant part of the aquaculture output. The Guild's senior ecologists have been monitoring this trend for eleven years. Their current working hypothesis is that the G0Ve star's emission variability is driving a slow shift in water chemistry that the current species mix cannot fully adapt to.
The Guild has not published this analysis. The council has not been informed. The Guild is working on a managed species-mix transition that would take fifteen to twenty years to implement. The public knows the managed transition is being discussed. It does not know why. A Guild trainee completing thesis research in the shelf zone ecology models has recently encountered the restricted dataset, which is the kind of event that begins a series of other events.
Practical Information
Marunong is seven hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Songjiang and Whitfield Crossing. The aquaculture output is excellent by any objective measure. The volcanic mineral exports are sustainably managed. The monitoring equipment workshop is highly regarded. The trend in the restricted dataset is eleven years old and still going in the same direction.
