THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PEDRA SECA
PEDRA SECA means "dry stone," and the name is literal. Two hundred and eighty years of careful water management has produced a community built around cisterns, and the cisterns are the most solidly built structures in the settlement, maintained to the highest standard, treated with the particular reverence that communities reserve for the thing that keeps them alive.
The Dry Stone and Its Farmers
The K7V primary is cool. The habitable world's hydrological cycle operates at minimum throughput. Precipitation occurs, technically, in quantities the survey record describes as "measurable." The atmosphere is breathable. The gravity is comfortable. Everything is adequate except the water, and the water is the thing that matters.
The wave-3 settlers who arrived 280 years ago carried cultural memory that made the conditions recognizable rather than hostile. Afrikaans and Xhosa heritage from the south_reach's Southern African cultural stream — people whose ancestors had farmed dry land on Earth, whose techniques for water management predated industrial technology. They recognized Pedra Seca not as hostile but as familiar. The founding generation built the cistern infrastructure first, lived in temporary shelters while they did it, and began permanent construction only once the water supply was secured.
That priority ordering is the community's founding philosophy made visible in stone.
Who Runs the Cisterns
Water allocation is the primary governance function. The council exists to administer the water allocation and not the other way around. Disputes over water are the community's primary form of political conflict. Everything else — trade policy, external relations, corridor management — is secondary to the question of who receives how much water and when. The Southern African heritage is visible in the governance style: deliberative, consensus-seeking, willing to sit with a dispute until it resolves rather than forcing a vote that leaves a minority resentful.
The Last Provisioned Stop
Travessia on one side, GJ 3943's unsettled binary gap on the other. Pedra Seca is the last reliably provisioned system before the corridor enters the unsettled stretch. Travelers heading deeper refill their water reserves here. The community sells water at prices that reflect the reality that every liter sold is a liter the cistern network must replace, and replacement depends on rainfall that arrives on its own schedule. The founding charter includes provisions against profiteering from essential supply. This has held for 280 years.
The critical supply dependency running in the other direction is seed stock: the adapted drought-resistant cultivars the community's agriculture relies on require periodic genetic refreshment from the south_reach's agricultural seed banks. Fourteen hops to arrive. Disruption would produce a slow genetic bottleneck over several generations. This is the kind of risk that develops so slowly that each generation inherits it without inheriting the urgency.
Practical Information
Pedra Seca is sixteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Travessia and GJ 3943. Water is available for purchase at posted rates. Basic agricultural goods are available. The cisterns are impressive. Do not waste the water.
