THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — LANGEMARK
LANGEMARK is the name of a World War I battlefield, chosen by the founding cooperative's leader because his ancestry ran through a family that had documented its presence on that ground, and because he wanted the name to carry something about persisting in difficult conditions. Three hundred years later the name has mostly shed that specific referent and become simply the system's name. This is how naming works.
The Distance
Wave 3 at hop 14. Farmers and small-scale extractors who followed the gate path outward from the inner west corridor until they found enough distance from the corporate governance structures that were already consolidating there. The K2V star provided an unremarkable and stable environment, which in retrospect was exactly what they needed: no flare activity, no luminosity variation, a habitable zone with agricultural potential. The founding cooperative built a community. The community has been running for three hundred years.
Governing itself through a council structure that predates the Assembly's authority gradient reaching this far, predates the Compact, predates most of what the inner west considers normal governance. The founding cooperative's documents, amended many times, are the constitutional foundation. The council of landholders — expanded over generations to include non-agricultural community members — makes decisions by consensus where possible and by supermajority where it cannot. This works. It has worked for three hundred years.
The Compact approached twice in the past generation. The council declined both times with recorded respect for the Compact's principles and a practical explanation: membership requires attending rotating council sessions, participating in commercial treaty negotiations, responding to other members' governance situations. At hop 14, the round-trip time for a delegate to reach a Compact session and return is measured in months. Langemark does not join organizations it cannot meaningfully participate in.
The Trend
The population peaked about eighty years ago and has been declining slowly since. No famine, no epidemic, no political crisis. Young adults leave for Alshain, Randsholm, Freiholt, Hansestadt — systems that offer more variety. Langemark's agricultural economy provides a good life for people who want exactly that life. It does not retain people who want something different. The council discusses this in closed session and has quietly discontinued several unrealized initiatives — an education expansion, a light manufacturing pilot, a trade mission to Alshain — when the practical difficulties of implementation at this distance became clear.
The founding cooperative's grandchildren who stayed are governing a system that is slowly becoming less of what it was, at a pace that falls within every planning horizon without exceeding it.
Practical Information
Langemark is fourteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Echternach and Bout du Chemin. The Gate Corporation visits on a fourteen-month maintenance cycle. Everything else manages itself.
