Population

Vindkast was settled within the last forty to one hundred years — precise founding dates are contested because the first wave of arrivals came in stages, beginning as licensed prospecting teams and transitioning to permanent settlement status only after the initial mineral surveys confirmed viable long-term extraction potential. The name is Norwegian: "wind blast." The settlers knew what they were moving to before they arrived. The survey data was unambiguous about the atmospheric conditions, and they came anyway because the same geological exposure that makes the planet inhospitable also makes it legible.

The world is high-altitude and wind-scoured across most of its surface. Its primary continent sits at significant orbital eccentricity, producing seasonal variation severe enough that the equatorial plateau — where the settlement is established — experiences wind-shear conditions that would ground standard transit vehicles for roughly a third of the year. The bedrock is exposed across wide plains where erosion has stripped away everything that would have buried the mineral seams on a calmer world. Silicate structures that would require deep drilling elsewhere are visible from surface survey. The settlers came with exposure mapping equipment and set to work.

The community is young and has the character of early settlement: an improvised governance structure built around the original prospecting claim-holders, infrastructure that is functional rather than finished, and a social density that comes from everyone knowing everyone because everyone arrived in the same decade or two. The first generation of children born on Vindkast is now reaching working age. The community is deciding, in real time, what it wants to be — whether the claim-holders who built the initial infrastructure will consolidate into something resembling the single-family resource operations elsewhere in the corridor, or whether the wave of younger workers arriving from GJ 3737 will push for different arrangements.

The loop connection to GJ 542 (Kopparhytta) is practically important: Vindkast's extraction operation produces raw ore and mineral concentrate that requires processing infrastructure Vindkast does not yet have. Kopparhytta's smelting capacity has been the practical outlet for Vindkast product almost since the beginning. The two communities have developed working ties that are closer than either has with GJ 3737, despite the formal topology.

Supply Dependency

Vindkast depends heavily on inbound freight for almost everything that is not extracted from the ground. Wave_5 settlement means the agricultural base is minimal — most food is imported, some is grown in climate-controlled structures that were themselves imported. Technical equipment for the extraction operation comes from GJ 3737 inward, with a transit lag that has shaped the community's approach to maintenance: everything is maintained longer than the manufacturer specifies and repaired rather than replaced wherever possible.

Outbound: raw mineral concentrate (primarily silicate-metal composite ore), surface-extracted mineral samples sold to geological survey agencies in the inner corridor, and a small volume of crystalline mineral formations that have developed a decorative market value — Vindkast wind-cut crystal, shaped by atmospheric abrasion into irregular but aesthetically interesting forms, sold through Kopparhytta's artisanal export channels.

Faction Notes

No Commission presence. The Vind Prospecting Cooperative — the successor entity to the original claim-holder group — manages the aperture transit facility and handles customs functions under a provisional operating license that has been renewed twice without review. The cooperative's leadership is the de facto government.

A minority faction of newer arrivals, loosely organized around a community meeting structure called the Taksting ("roof assembly," referring to the pressurized meeting hall that serves as the settlement's main civic space), has begun pushing for a formal settlement charter and elected governance. The cooperative's founding members are not opposed in principle but are moving slowly, as people who built the infrastructure tend to move when asked to redistribute authority over it.

Silence Topic

The original survey team. Vindkast's formal settlement license was preceded by an eighteen-month licensed prospecting period conducted by a team whose composition is not in the public record. The current cooperative leadership includes none of the original prospectors. Where the original team went — whether they sold their claim position and moved on, or whether something about the early survey period ended their involvement — is not discussed. The wind-cut crystal market emerged suspiciously quickly for a wave_5 settlement, suggesting some pre-settlement market development that would have required the original survey team's involvement.

Narrative Hook

The wind-cut crystal pieces reaching inner-corridor collectors have begun arriving with trace mineral compositions that do not match any mapped extraction zone on the planet's surface survey.

Calibration Note

The K8V stellar class sits near the bottom of the K-type range, close to M. It provides substantially less insolation than a mid-K star, which contributes to the atmospheric dynamics that produce the wind conditions: the temperature differential between the planet's equatorial and polar regions is compressed, but the low atmospheric density at altitude produces high-velocity wind shear rather than the low-energy circulation pattern a warmer world would generate. Wave_5 settlement at hop 8 reflects the loop topology — Vindkast was accessible through an established corridor chain rather than requiring independent deep-reach transit capacity.
