THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — VINDKAST
VINDKAST means "wind blast" in Norwegian, and the settlers who chose it had already reviewed the atmospheric survey data before arriving, which means the name was not a surprise but a statement of intent: we know what this is, we are coming anyway.
The World
The K8V star sits near the bottom of the K-type range. The primary continent's orbital eccentricity produces seasonal variation severe enough that the equatorial plateau experiences wind-shear conditions that would ground standard transit vehicles for roughly a third of the year. The bedrock is exposed across wide plains where erosion has stripped away everything that would have buried the mineral seams on a calmer world. The geological exposure that makes the planet inhospitable also makes it legible. The settlers came with exposure mapping equipment and set to work.
Wave 5 settlement. Forty years old. The community is still deciding what it wants to be. Infrastructure functional rather than finished. Everyone arrived in the same decade or two. The first generation of children born on Vindkast is reaching working age and has opinions that differ from the founders' in some cases and reinforce them in others. The Vind Prospecting Cooperative — the successor entity to the original claim-holders — manages the aperture facility, handles customs functions under a provisional operating license, and is moving slowly on the question of distributing governance authority to the people who arrived after the infrastructure was built, which is how people who built infrastructure tend to move when asked that question.
The Crystal
The wind-cut crystal pieces reaching inner-corridor collectors — shaped by atmospheric abrasion into irregular but aesthetically interesting forms — have recently arrived with trace mineral compositions that do not match any mapped extraction zone on the planet's surface survey. The wind-cut crystal market emerged suspiciously quickly for a wave_5 settlement, suggesting pre-settlement market development that would have required the original survey team's involvement. The original prospectors are not among the cooperative's current leadership. Where they went is not discussed.
Practical Information
Vindkast is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Nyrheim and Kopparhytta. The Taksting — the pressurized meeting hall that serves as the settlement's main civic space — has been pushing for a formal settlement charter for two years. The cooperative is reviewing the proposal. The wind is always blowing.
