THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KORHONEN
KORHONEN was named after the geologist who found what was in the rock, which is appropriate, because what is in the rock is the only thing about Korhonen that anyone has ever paid to know.
The Extraction
Aino Korhonen filed an accurate survey, collected her finder's fee, and moved on to the next rock. The development syndicate named the system after her in the wave_4 convention — cheaper than resolving a naming dispute — and then proceeded to extract the transition metal deposits her survey identified. The syndicate was absorbed within forty years. Its successor was reorganized twice. The current entity, Korhonen Extraction Partners, is named for legal continuity rather than sentiment. The rock is still there, largely. The company that extracts it has changed its name three times but the same leverage structure has remained intact throughout: one gate, one neighbor, one trade route, and GJ 66A's freight brokers on the other side of it setting the terms.
The resident community won genuine concessions in a labor dispute eighty years ago — authority over housing conditions, safety standards, shift structures. This was not nothing. The community built multigenerational infrastructure on the assumption of a long economic future, which required a belief that the rock would last. The council has formal authority over the working conditions of extracting the rock. It does not have authority over how long the rock will last, or what the company currently thinks that timeline looks like.
The Projection Discrepancy
The original survey projected extractable reserves sufficient for approximately three centuries of operation. The company's internal documents — not public, not filed — show updated estimates that are considerably more conservative than that figure. The company's public-facing communications reflect the original projection. The resident community is building its future on the original projection. The management's current planning horizon is not the subject of any community briefing on record.
There is nothing unusual about a mining company maintaining internal estimates that differ from public-facing ones. The practice is common enough that the Commission's disclosure framework has explicit provisions governing it, and those provisions require disclosure on a schedule that, in Korhonen's case, has not yet produced a disclosure.
Practical Information
Korhonen is four hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to GJ 66A. The surface conditions are poor — cold, thin atmosphere, inadequate for open agriculture — and the population lives in the underground and sealed-habitat infrastructure that extractive operations on M-dwarf planets standardly require. The flare activity from the M6 primary is managed, not absent. What arrives through the gate is food, equipment, and labor contracts. What leaves is ore concentrates and refined refractories.
The system has the character of a place that has been told it has a long future and is in the process of discovering whether that is true.
