THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MORALES' END
MORALES' END is named with the directional honesty of a community that has had three hundred years to make peace with being the last stop, and has.
The End
Alejandro Morales led the wave 3 expedition here and found, when he arrived, that there was no gate onward. His journals — the founding archive is one of the most complete records of a wave 3 expedition in the region — describe the survey with characteristic understatement. The community he founded chose a name that incorporated the topology rather than obscuring it. "End" is not pejorative in south Reach usage. It is where the path terminates. The path terminates here.
One gate, connecting to Kruger 60 and, through Kruger 60, to everything else. The community spent sixty years genuinely isolated before that gate opened — before the connection that made the system accessible to the wider Reach. The founding archive covers those sixty years in detail except for the years immediately preceding the gate's opening, which are represented by far fewer entries than any surrounding period. The final entry in Alejandro Morales' own hand, before the gap, references an agreement made with "the station's prior occupants." The phrase appears nowhere else. The family council's historians have never explained it.
The Variable Star
The M2Vvar primary — variable, meaning it dims and brightens on a cycle the community long ago mapped precisely — gives Morales' End an unusual quality of time. The agricultural calendar, the harvest windows, the maintenance rotations are all structured around stellar output that is not constant. The stellar cycle is incorporated into how residents experience the year. Visitors from more stable systems find the variability unsettling. Residents find it as natural as weather, and the same way they think about weather: a thing you account for, not a thing you control.
The governance is a family-representative council — formal political standing tied to family membership, permanent seats held by family networks of more than fifty registered members. It is the most explicitly relational governance structure in the south Reach and functions, in a community of twenty-five thousand where three hundred years of continuous residence have layered the kinship networks thoroughly, with a kind of internal coherence that more abstract institutional arrangements cannot replicate. The Supply Board, which controls the import schedule through Kruger 60, is the most practically powerful entity in the system. Control of what a community can and cannot have is a form of authority that formal titles do not always reflect.
Practical Information
Morales' End is four hops from Gateway with one gate aperture. Emergency reserves are maintained at eight months of self-sufficiency. The agricultural surplus is good in favorable years. The community's Spanish founding heritage is legible throughout — in names, in archives, in the family networks that form the governance structure. The Morales family is still among the prominent ones. Three hundred years of careful record-keeping means that the archive is both exceptionally complete and precisely calibrated in what it omits.
