The system takes its name from Jérôme Lalande, the French astronomer who catalogued the star in the eighteenth century. Survey teams used the designation so consistently during the early reconnaissance era that by the time wave_4 settlers arrived in earnest, there was simply no competing name. Some communities name themselves. Lalande was named by accident and never bothered to change it.
What Lalande has always had is position. At three hops from Gateway, it sits at the structural center of the south inner ring — the point through which five adjacent systems must route if they want to reach each other or the core. Zenzele and Ribeiro's Star to the south and east, Kruger 60 and Carvalhais flanking it toward the outer systems, Crux Station reaching north toward Altair. The horizon station at Lalande sees more scheduled transit volume than any comparable ring hub in the south_reach, and the community built around that traffic reflects it: maintenance cooperatives, bonded cargo brokers, refueling syndicates, and a population that skews transient in a way that permanent residents have long since stopped minding.

Critics note that this gives freight companies formal political power; supporters note that freight is what Lalande runs on, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest governance. The Assembly maintains a full delegate office, a compliance inspectorate, and regular patrol rotations through all five gates. At hop 3, the institutional presence is visible without being heavy — the kind of oversight that most residents register as background noise rather than active constraint.
The cultural texture of Lalande is a blend accumulated through centuries of transit. The founding wave_4 population carried traces of the Iberian corridor — Portuguese and Spanish surnames still dominate the residential registers — but the constant turnover has diluted any strong founding-heritage identity. You can find a dozen linguistic communities in the port district alone. What persists is a pragmatic relational warmth: people here help strangers with directions, share meals in the transit canteens, keep disputes quiet. The south_reach instinct toward community is expressed through hospitality rather than deep kinship networks.
Supply Dependency
Lalande does not produce much of what it consumes. Processed foodstuffs move in from Zenzele and Ribeiro's Star. Industrial components arrive from Confluência via Carvalhais. The system's economic output is almost entirely service-sector: transit logistics, cargo bonding, ship maintenance, crew housing, and the administrative apparatus of being a hub. If the gates went quiet, Lalande would face food shortages within weeks. The community knows this; it is the reason the carrier syndicates hold political seats.
Faction Notes
The Carrier Syndicate Council — an informal collective of the three largest freight operators working through Lalande — holds formal political representation. They are not a unified bloc; they compete for gate assignments and preferential scheduling, but they coordinate against anything that would compromise the hub's neutral status. Lalande's utility depends on all five adjacent systems trusting it equally, and the syndicates understand that partisanship would be commercially ruinous.
The Assembly Compliance Office maintains a staff of eleven, with rotating inspectors from Gateway. Their mandate is customs verification and transit record accuracy; their presence at hop 3 means periodic spot inspections of freight manifests are routine. Most residents view them as a cost of doing business rather than a threat.
Silence Topic
Lalande does not discuss the gap between when the horizon station was built and when formal settlement was chartered. The century of pre-settlement operation left records that are technically accessible but practically opaque — who operated the station in those years, under what authority, and what moved through it are questions the carrier syndicates do not encourage. The Assembly compliance office has audited the pre-charter records twice and closed the inquiry both times. Most residents simply don't ask. The gap is institutional memory that everyone has agreed, without formal agreement, to leave undisturbed.
Narrative Hook
A bonded cargo record from the pre-charter era has surfaced in a freight broker's inheritance — a manifest listing a shipment that, if real, would contradict the official account of how one of the five gates was financed.
Calibration Note
Wave_4 settlement for a hop-3 hub is unusual. Justified by infrastructure-first history: the horizon station served as a transit node decades before permanent civilian settlement was formally chartered. The community formed around the infrastructure rather than the infrastructure being built to serve the community.
