THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — WAGTORING
WAGTORING appears in at least one regional registry as uninhabited, which is technically false, and the community responsible for the error has never corrected it, which is technically deliberate.
The Watchtower
Wagtoring is Afrikaans for watchtower, one of the few founding-language words still in active use at Oude Kraal, and the name is exactly literal. The outstation was established by Oude Kraal's community assembly roughly 180 years ago, in a period when the north arc had extended far enough that systems beyond their own gate were no longer guaranteed empty. The assembly's recorded rationale was brief: they wanted eyes on the space beyond their aperture.
What the watchtower is watching for has never been formally specified. The founding resolution described "awareness of approach" as the purpose, which is either a very old-fashioned security instinct from a five-hundred-year frontier community, or a deliberate vagueness from people who had something specific in mind and chose not to put it in the written record. The deliberation that preceded the resolution is not in Oude Kraal's records. This is the same period that Oude Kraal's founding-era archive gaps cover.
The outstation is physically minimal: a pressurized habitat cluster built into a captured body in the system's inner belt, a sensor array extended and upgraded continuously for 180 years, the usual accumulation of a permanent human presence. Between twelve and twenty adults and children at any given time, cycling through in staggered three-year postings from six rotating families. By corridor registry criteria for distinguishing settlement from facility, Wagtoring falls into a gap. Oude Kraal considers the classification gap irrelevant. It is theirs.
The Logs
The sensor array has been continuously operational for 180 years. Wagtoring's sensor logs represent 180 years of observational data on traffic and anomalies in this corner of the Reach, and they have never been shared with any external body. The current rotational families know the standing orders. None of them know why the standing orders have the specific shape they do.
Every time a researcher has requested access to the logs, Oude Kraal's assembly has declined. Without explanation. Every time.
Practical Information
Wagtoring is seven hops from Gateway, adjacent only to Oude Kraal. No public transit schedule. No registered commercial operators. No gate listing in standard booking infrastructure. Supply comes entirely from Oude Kraal on Oude Kraal's schedule. The outstation is designed to operate at reduced capacity for extended periods if resupply is delayed.
The K-type star is dim and distant. The sensor array is old and very thorough.
