THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — DZIMBAHWE
DZIMBAHWE means "great house of stone," which the founding generation chose deliberately, and which, four hundred years later, describes the system in both the literal and architectural senses they intended.
What Stone Does Here
The geological situation is unusual in the specific way that produces valuable outcomes: tectonic processes have pushed dense mineral deposits close to the surface across extensive areas of the primary continent. Four hundred years of extraction have not depleted them. The M0V primary is warmer than the mid-M stars in neighboring systems, the inhabited world has a genuine day-night cycle — ninety-three standard hours, which is long enough to reshape agriculture but not long enough to produce the extreme thermal differentials of full tidal lock — and the mineral-soil chemistry on the surface is complicated enough that some crops are difficult and stone is abundant.
Chikomo Extractions — six cooperatives under a shared brand established four hundred years ago when the founding families' descendants decided that core commercial interests were playing them against each other in price negotiations — exports refined basalt and the locally named metamorphic Chikomo stone, dark grey, fine-grained, polishes to near-mirror. Procurement managers in inner-ring construction supply trust the Chikomo Extractions name the way they trust any specification they have never had cause to dispute. The brand has no glamour and an excellent reputation, which is the more durable combination.
What the Stone Also Does
The sculptural tradition is four hundred years old and has never been standardized. Dzimbahwe's stone-workers take the same material the mining cooperatives export and apply an accumulated aesthetic vocabulary — Shona and Ndebele in its founding grammar, absorbing over four centuries whatever visual languages arrived with new settlers and were found worth keeping. The figures describe forces and relationships more than shapes, working with the stone's grain to find what the material contains and make it visible. The Carvers' Association certifies not whether a piece can be sold but whether a piece can claim lineage in the tradition; the Association has expelled three families in its history for failing to maintain transmission, which signals how seriously the community takes its own continuity.
The most sought-after pieces from established families command inner-ring prices that the stone-workers find both accurate and beside the point. The commercial value is a byproduct. The work is the thing.
The Pricing Question
The Chikomo Extractions Collective's prices to inner-ring construction suppliers have been stable for decades. The prices that outer south Reach construction cooperatives pay at their end of the distribution chain have risen consistently. The differential is being absorbed somewhere in the distribution chain. The distribution cooperatives involved have not been audited in forty years. The collective's position is that distribution cost increases are a matter between the distribution cooperatives and their customers.
Practical Information
Dzimbahwe is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures — spur end connecting to Zenzele and GJ 827. Food staples come in from Zenzele. Technical components arrive via Zenzele from the inner ring. The community imports what it cannot grow or mine, which is not much. The founding Shona and Ndebele heritage is maintained through the sculptural tradition, the naming conventions, and the cooperative structure that has operated continuously for four centuries.
