THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — DUNBAR

DUNBAR orbits a white dwarf — the cold remnant of a star that exhausted itself long before humans reached this far — which is the kind of stellar address that concentrates the mind on what you actually came here for, since the star itself is providing almost nothing.

The Station

Settlement around a white dwarf is necessarily a station. There is no habitable planet; there is no stellar heat to speak of. What a white dwarf provides is a position in the network, and position was enough for the Wave 3 settlers who established the station here, following the Commonwealth's outward push from New Ballarat. The station is entirely artificial, fully pressurized and heated from internal power generation, orbiting the ancient stellar remnant at a distance chosen for orbital stability. The hydroponics rings supply food. The transit loop provides revenue. The community provides itself with the quiet satisfaction of having carried Scottish heritage further than most.

The founding community's cultural continuity is more actively maintained here than in many Wave 3 systems. At the edge of the network, there is no dominant regional identity to assimilate to, which means the culture survives by decision rather than by default. Scots-inflected speech patterns persist in informal contexts. Traditional observances are maintained. The pride is quiet, which is the correct kind.

The Liaison

The Assembly liaison officer has lived on the station for twelve years. She identifies as a community member rather than an outside representative, which is either a genuine acculturation or a consequence of twelve years at a posting with limited exit options. The relationship between her office and the Station Council has been amicable because the Council is careful not to create situations that require escalation, and because she is careful about what she escalates. What she has not escalated — what she has instead been communicating through personal correspondence to a contact at New Ballarat's parliamentary offices — concerns the condition of the outer loop transit infrastructure toward GJ 3325. The inner arc toward New Ballarat is maintained adequately. The outer arc is not maintained to the same standard and has not been reported in public transit schedules.

Those personal messages stopped several months ago.

Practical Information

Dunbar is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to New Ballarat inward and GJ 3325 outward. The transit economy is comfortable rather than prosperous — some of New Ballarat's junction traffic routes through here toward the outer reach, but not at inner-arc volumes. The council chair is directly elected. The assembly liaison observes. The outer loop carries irregular traffic to a system not fully developed.

The white dwarf provides navigational reference and the existential reminder that stars do not last forever, which Dunbar residents take in their stride.

Adams of the Guide rates Dunbar: Resilient. Outer Loop Status Unclear.
