THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CONFLUENT
CONFLUENT is named for convergence — where things flow together — which is accurate about the transit topology but misses the point entirely, because Confluent is wine, and the transit infrastructure is simply how the wine reaches the people who want it.
The Viticulture
The F8V primary burns white-warm across le Pays's growing regions. The French founding families arrived four hundred years ago with root cuttings, soil analysis equipment, detailed viticultural records, and a proposition that this world's combination of mineral-rich volcanic soils, seasonal temperature variance, and stellar light could be made to yield something exceptional. They were correct. The Reach has been drinking the evidence ever since.
The growing regions are the economic core. The châteaux are the social institutions. The annual vintage cycle is the calendar by which most residents measure their year. The horizon station and transit infrastructure are important and everyone uses them and no one thinks they are what the place is about.
Domaine des Étoiles Fixes produces the flagship Carignan de Vide — deep, tannic, iron-mineral finish unique to its slope — and commands the highest inner-corridor prices. Château Fond de Ciel on the Plateau Gris produces the definitive Gris Blanc, a varietal that developed under Confluent's specific light spectrum into something with no exact terrestrial counterpart. Domaine de la Longue Veille produces Veille Dorée in quantities so small that most corridor residents have heard of it and none have tasted it. These estates and sixty more are organized around Vins de Grand Vide — the négociant cooperative that certifies quality, manages logistics, and has been doing so for three hundred and fifty years.
The transit function — through-route connecting Alshain inward and Randsholm outward — operates in the background. The customs and handling procedures for wine shipments are some of the most detailed in the west_reach. Vins de Grand Vide worked out the logistics of moving fragile cargo through aperture transit long ago.
The Archive
Vins de Grand Vide's Comptoir holds three hundred and fifty years of distribution data covering the west_reach corridor: every major commercial relationship, every freight arrangement, every buyer and intermediary across eight or nine hops inward. The archive was built to serve the wine trade. It reports to no one. It contains, as a byproduct of doing its actual job, an extraordinarily detailed map of how commercial relationships in the deep west_reach actually function. The institutions that would most benefit from access to this archive are the ones Vins de Grand Vide has the most incentive to keep at arm's length. The Comptoir is aware of its situation and has been aware of it for two centuries.
Practical Information
Confluent is ten hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Randsholm and Alshain. Food imports cover the portion the viticulture-focused agriculture does not supply. The wine is excellent across all price points and available throughout the corridor on the standard Vins de Grand Vide distribution schedule.
