THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 394
GJ 394 is the anteroom to Einde — the cold, dim, technically-not-quite-habitable M-dwarf system that every vessel must transit on the way to the community at the furthest end of this corridor arm.
The Appropriate Anteroom
Survey teams have described the primary world as "meeting minimum atmospheric parameters" and "suitable for emergency shelter with appropriate equipment." Neither characterization was offered in a tone of disappointment. The survey teams knew what they were looking at, and what they were looking at was a world designed by its stellar context to be uninviting. The outer edge of an M-dwarf habitable zone: cold, dry, atmospherically sparse. Technically within parameters. Practically marginal.
This is consistent with the mood of approaching Einde.
Anyone traveling to Einde must pass through GJ 394. The corridor topology ensures it. The cold world visible in navigational data during that transit is not hostile in any way that prevents passage, and it is not hospitable in any way that encourages stopping. It is exactly what the space between a settled corridor and a community that chose maximum distance from institutional authority should feel like — a transition, not a destination, the space between here and there.
The Function
GJ 394 connects GJ 177 and Einde. It is a corridor node. Its emptiness is appropriate — not incidental, but consistent with the corridor's character. The horizon station processes transit. The dim world turns below. The surveys sit in the archive describing minimum parameters. No proposal to settle it has been advanced, and none is expected, because the world communicates its own intentions clearly in the language of stellar physics.
Practical Information
GJ 394 is eleven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 177 and Einde. No services are available. Emergency shelter capable. Nothing about the system encourages a longer stay than the transit requires.
